Just saw this on SSN, and thought 'There's bound to be a thread about it on the home of gay chat', and here it is.
It's a bit cruel how homosexuality presents itself to the world in your voice and mannerisms, long before you become aware of it.

What rubbish.

On that basis, people will gossip about Tottenham's Kyle Walker after doing his interview following the Manchester United match yesterday, just because he sounded a bit different.

read what i wrote - why not accept the possibility. its not a belief either way, im just open to the concept that the reason none have come out is because there aren't any. bear with me why.

first, the oft quoted statistic is 1 in 10, and secondly when you go rooting around for actual stats you'll find 6% from some older study and an ONS research a coupl of years ago of only 1%, 0.5% bi and some other number "dont know" which is supposed to be yes (...yeah, reliable conclusion). say 4000 pro/semi-pro footballers, that means as few as 40 would declare themselves outright gay, right?

but, thirdly, such stats are bollocks. they are based on the entire population, why assume they extropolate to the football world? do you believe 6% mechanics are gay? how about the reverse, all those industries that stereotypically have a high proportion of gays? in my experience media is rather over represented statistically. if you think about it, why would someone gay go into a profession that is percieved as hostile to homosexuals? so i reached the conclusion that its pretty likely there arent any footballers in the closet.

A quality footballer probably shows just that at the age of around 8 to 10 possibly, when they wouldn't know what life's about.

Because of the natural talent shown they would then go the path of that profession due to parents etc.

They end up being rather good footballers and grow up with a mind of their own, and a sexuality of their own, but by now are in that profession, or most certainly could be, earning good money by doing what they do well and love doing.

Of course they're going to think, 'You know what, I might be gay, I'll become a postman instead'

Unfortunately, it isn't entirely rubbish because there is a very recent example of something along those lines. I didn't see it, but apparently before the Leverkusen-Man United match last week, Sky showed an interview with a Manchester United defender in which the player in question was shown to have an effeminate sounding voice. Cue people taking to Twitter afterwards ridiculing him and speculating on his sexuality just because his voice sounded different. And people then wonder why there are only isolated cases of professional footballers 'coming out' when grown adults behave like infant school kids just because someone has a quirk of speech.

My postman is a bender. It's annoying getting all your mail scrunched up.

OOOOOOO shock horror. Win a gold medal at the Olympics that would impress me so much more than you telling the nation you have a boyfriend and are bi-sexual.

Just be grateful you're getting something pushed into your box.

So merely stating an opinion is stupid. ok just to appease you, its such wonderful news and I will ask for his autograph for such heroic actions.

STATING an opinion is not stupid, the sentiment of your opinion is though.

I do think 'narna has a point, esp in this case, as Daley is yet to surprise anyone with his breaking 'news'.

Although the wording, sentiment and empathy could have been better.

Why does it have to be a surprise or something he is impressing anyone with then? There are reasons why made that video. None of those reasons were to surprise or impress.

Because he shouldn't have to make the video in the first place.
I and judging by this thread 'we' don't give a rats what and who he does.
TD winning a gold as a gay diver makes no impact in Stat World.
It won't stop me leaping about and screaming 'get in' (or whatever).

I can't help thinking the only reason he made the vid is to get ahead of some gutter journo, which is the real issue here.

Yes, he should not have to make this video, he said exactly that himself. The previous comment by the other poster however was just a cheap swipe.

Are you saying gay people can not be miserable, work shy moaners and groaners?

Whilst overwhelmingly support for Tom has been positive (as it of course should be), anyone who thinks it's easy should take a read at some of these comments:

http://storify.com/heyjackcooper/tom-daley-homophobia

but then there's no accounting for religious/bigoted stupidity.

Those bigoted comments are an irrelevance. They don't necessarily make it more difficult for someone to come out as gay. Watching Tom Daley's video, what he gets across best is that he now feels ready to talk about sexuality and relationships in a public and candid way. Coming from a place of empowerment and being totally unstoppable (as befits a true Olympian), the possibility of negative tweets don't really matter.
