I wonder what the highest positive variance is since the SUT began? Must be decent chance of beating it?

7 is the highest, which we can match on Saturday. I think there is a decent chance we could get to our biggest gap by game 11. Just need to beat Norwich and grab 1 point from Arsenal, Liverpool or City.

Biggest positive gap each season
20/21 - 5 ahead after beating Liverpool in game 22 (3rd Feb)
19/20 - 4 ahead after beating Wolves in game 16 (8th Dec)
18/19 - 7 ahead after beating Everton in game 20 (29th Dec)
17/18 - 5 ahead after beating Swansea in game 11 (4th Nov)

Biggest negative gap each season
20/21 - 3 behind after drawing with Burnley in game 8 (7th Nov)
19/20 - 6 behind after losing to Palace in game 28 (29th Feb)
18/19 - 5 behind after losing to Newcastle in game 36 (27th Apr)
17/18 - 4 behind after losing to Palace in game 33 (14th Apr)

With the Palace fans putting the spin on our successful start, arguing that we're where we are because we've played a lot of weak sides, I took a look at where we would have been this year with our results from the corresponding fixtures last year. Apologies to Tracker purists, but this seemed the best place to put it. Below are the comparisons with this year and last year's results:

Palace (A) 2020/21 - 1 pt / 2021/22 - 1pt
Leicester (H) 2020/21 - 0 pts / 2021/22 - 3pts
Play off winners Fulham (A) 2020/21 - 1 pt / Brentford (A) 2021/22 - 3pts
Everton (H) 2020/21 - 1 pt / 2021/22 - 0 pts
Championship Runner up WBA (H) 2020/21 - 1pt / Watford (H) 2021/22 - 3pts
Burnley (A) 2020/21 - 1 pt / 2021/22 - 3pts

Totals

2020/21: 5 points, 0 wins, 1 loss, 5 draws GF 5, GA 6, GD-1
2021/22: 13 points, 4 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw, GF 8, GA 5, GD +3

Last year's return applied to this year's table would have us currently sat in 16th, a place below Palace, instead of 9 places above them. Palace, who their fans claim are a completely different prospect this year, have near identical results to Roy's defensive side. They have taken two more points from their corresponding fixtures, solely due to Tottenham's meltdown against them. The three goals scored in that game also provide the only divergence in their goal difference. Applying last year's results for them would have them sitting in 16th instead of 15th.

God, that Bridge Car Park is a nightmare to get out of isn't it!

Anyway, a bonus point in the bag. FIVE over. Although that is two lost against the European tracker, so 2 over there.

Big chance for 2 bonus points at Norwich though.

The Giraffe 'Big Book of Excuses for late posting post-match, number 34?' :)

Still the best thread on NSC - the one I always turn to straight away! Thank you.

Won't get 6 more points now over the next 8 games.

That's a shame, it was fun while it lasted. :lolol: :dunce:

Quite amazing isn't it. Looking at who we're playing, and the form we/they are in - we could be getting 12-15 points in those games! Astonishing to think of it in this way.

Safe by Christmas...!

.

It’s certainly an increasing trend. Lot harder to do when you’re at the game whereas last season I had the laptop on my lap at home as I watched the final whistle :)

Another interesting graph I stumbled across on twitter called "the other 14" i.e the non big six.

Has us +5 ahead of their tracker to 39 points.

I always just look at the path to 40 points as 4 blocks of 10 points to achieve, keeping a rate of just over a point a game going, so the fact that we could potentially be near to 20 points by 10 games is such a comfortable position to be in. Long may it continue.

Funny to hear abot Wayne Bridge cleaning his boots... must have felt pretty awkward.

Why would it have felt awkward? Bridge would have been a 16 year old apprentice when Potter was at Southampton. It was the way of football back then, the apprentices cleaned the boots of the pros.
