I've had it for about 4 years after some knob on a film set didn't listen to instructions and fired off 20 rounds from an AK47 about 6 inches from my left ear. So have to have radio on at night now or I can't sleep. Every now and again I also get a piercing noise that comes suddenly and goes just as suddenly. As far as I know nothing can be done to reverse it so just get on with it. Hate it.

My Local Nurse blamed it on my smoking ,but she blamed every ailment on smoking. She even told me smoking killed my old man ,strange as he never smoked. Not suffered from tinitus for a few year's now i put mine down to heavy plant on Building sites.

I'm quite surprised at how many people have come on here with this complaint as the thread was only started this evening, but I'm quite shocked at some of the very short exposures to noise that have brought this on. I have a noisy old electric shaver which is a little uncomfortable near the ears; I have some earplugs which I will now use until I can get it replaced. Also, the hand driers in our Asda are incredibly loud when both are going together; I won't be drying my face under them any more!
I note that nobody has mentioned noise cancelling headphones; I presume this is because they don't work with perceived noise?

Interesting piece on Breakfast News this morning regarding Tinnitus.

Having been a sufferer now for 10 years after ONE day Clay pigeon shooting without ear defenders I was interested to note the woman being interviewed had the same experience as me when first diagnosed.

Basically my GP told me to, and I quote, "get on with it, there's nothing we can do" This was the last thing I needed to hear at this point and about 3 weeks later having zero sleep other than when complete exhaustion shut my body down I suffered a minor breakdown.

Has anyone else had the same experience with their GP?

Been a sufferer since a very bad ear infection in 1983! 3 operations and 30 years later things are a better but I'm so used to it now I hardly notice it!

genuinely surprised how many suffer on here, ive had it for 3 years now after a heavy shooting session(yes was wearing defenders as well),the specialist was sympathetic but as with everyone else it seems there is not much that can be done although i was told diet and reducing your blood pressure can help, the fan thing works for me too. When its very bad i can get severe vertigo as well, i was told to try and cut my salt intake to see if that helps, oddly enough it does.

Thanks for the heads up. But you can lead a horse to water. but you cant make them drink!

If they are your apprentices, as in you are their manager/supervisor, you have a legal obligation to enforce the wearing of ear defenders once noise reaches 85dbA (you have to provide it at 80dbA but not enforce it) if you can't make other changes to reduce the levels to below that. So yes, you can make them drink, as if they refuse to they are in breach of their general legal obligations as an employee under the H&S at Work Act, and you are in breach of your duty of care under the H&S at Work Act, Management of Health & Safety at Work Regs, and The Control of Noise at Work Regs. Sorry to be a bit of a nerd, but it's my job and it's important you know so you can protect their health and keep yourself out of court.

A curious development

Something a bit odd is going on, every time a female speaks in my office I get a short burst of noise in my right ear, a bit like Morse code, does anyone else get this?

I've had tinnitus for seven years and learnt to live with it but this morning I have woken up with a cold so this may be a factor, but it is REALLY bloody annoying.

Funny that, I always thought I did it in 2004 but the wife told me different this morning.
Well it sounds awful (no pun intended). I've had some ear defenders in my screwfix saved list for ages, I should get them before I get on the DIY again.

25 years and counting. Kettle whistle mainly. Tends to get more pronounced when stressed. Have learnt to live with it. Rarely bothers me anymore.

I've had it for about ten years since an inner ear infection. It comes and goes and is definitely worse when stressed and when bunged up after a cold. I sometimes get vertigo with it, which contrary to popular belief (and Alfred Hitchcock), is nothing to do with fear of heights.
