This is how Australians are supposedly treating refugees...

Slightly off topic but It always amazes me when people trying to bastion Australia as a country we should try to emulate when it comes to cultural problems. A country that literally classed Aboriginal people as "plants & animals" until 1967 is now someone we should aspire to be like in some people's minds. Crazy.

All positive stuff. It will help to deter others from following them. And they're all so frigging irresponsible having babies in those conditions. Very ignorant people.

Yes, it's good. It is very sobering to find out the conditions they come from and the perils they face trying to reach safety. All too easy to look at where they end up and dismiss them as scrounging illegals.

I have met a good number of them and you certainly wouldn't write them off as such if you hear their stories. The situation is shameful in my opinion, I think in years to come we will look back on the way we treated these people with shame (although to be fair many of us already do).

Australia is a VAST, sparsely populated country with bountiful resources and is very wealthy. It is the perfect destination. And they do their part for sure. Unfortunately Australians don't have a good reputation for treating others very well throughout history. They have pushed their own indigenous population to the brink of dignity so they aren't likely to take kindly to refugees landing on their shores.

The argument that billions has been spent on them, so they can be treated like shit, guilt free, frankly , does not stand.

Yeah you're leaving out the bit where it was the British that created the policies and mindset regarding the indigenous population.

Given we've never had the racial issues the US or UK has had over the years we're a pretty damn successful multi-cultural society.

We're as good as it gets when aspiring to a multi-cultural society given how there's no 100% successful multi-cultural society in existence.

To be fair, It was Brits who done for the aboriginals to begin with and the Aussie government has passed many multiculturism acts and does, in theory, promote ethnic diversity and provide constitutional protection for ethnic minorities. It doesn't really play out that way in practice.

**** off you bore. Name one highly multi-cultural nation that's got as conflict free history as ours between different ethnic groups.

Australia struggles to take responsibility for its past because it is too easy to blame the mother country rather than take responsibility for itself.

The policy is supposed to be a detterent.
The policy of abuse is against human rights.

It's dettering them from getting on a boat and heading here.
How exactly does it deter people - do you film the mistreatment of refugees and then display the footage in war torn places so they know not to come to Australia?

To be fair, I don't think you really gave the Aboriginals much chance for conflict eh.

I grew up with lots of immigrants who arrived with papers.

You know who is against these "refugeees" the most?

Previous groups of immigrants/refugess who came through the right channels are.

Like Australians you mean?

Well because by the time they've often travelled through 6-7 other nations they could have sought asylum in before they get to Indonesia. Indonesia does sod all to stop them getting on boats and trying to arrive here without going through the right channels.

The detterent is that the boatmen in Indonesia won't head to Australia now because they know they'll not be allowed onto Australia soil.

And let's not pretend they all come from war torn places. There's plenty of economic refugees trying to get in under the guise of a political refugee.
