Top band who really know how to write and craft songs, I really enjoyed them on the NME thingy, and I'll be checking them out at The Great Escape. And the bassist thinks he is Mick Jones..which is no bad thing. I used to think I was Joe Strummer for a few years.

Sadly I'll be away that weekend.

Really really like them. I see they are playing The Great Escape, as is Frank Turner. I'd love to see them but
I'm not sure how the tickets work for Great Escape, do you have to shell out £45 and then just find the venue
they are playing in?

they are playing the corn exchangeand its a late show on the saturday i think, if it is a late show it means there is only 2 or 3 going at that point so it will be a potential nightmare to get into, however the great escape is fantastic in my opinion. Yes its 45 quid but you have three evenings of live music and its a great buzz round the town.

Just what we need in music right now. Another shit band thinking that they're the clash. Great.

Just because someone is in a moderately shit indie band, doesn't mean they're going to be a good DJ. I hate it when you see posters that say "Bloc Party" (or whatever), then in really small writing underneath "DJ Set". I don't give a f*** what music Kele Okereke wants to play.

Well, I thought I was Joe Strummer for a while and it has not done me any harm.

This. Pendulum do it all the time and it's not the same thing!

There used to be a club night called "That Stupid Club" at the old Concorde opposite the Palace Pier.I went along once because Mark E Smith was doing a DJ set. I had no idea before arriving that the club night was ostensibly for lesbian and transgender open mic poetry. My mate (a brickie) got involved in a heated argument about myalgic encephalitis with this lezzer that we nicknamed Hairy Knuckles.

Possibly the most surreal night I've ever had.

Agreed.

Went to see James Blake, who I absolutely LOVE the other day and he did a DJ set. Gutted.

Hip-Hop artists tend to do a lot of it as well, went to see Kid Koala expecting him to do his turtabling thing but he just put on a couple of records.

This. It's a fantastic way to spend 3 days. I take the Friday off work and really get stuck into the event. Three days, wandering around the city, walking into numerous bars and clubs catching some great music. And as you say the buzz around the city is brilliant.

My gang purchase 'early bird' delegate passes for £80 which gives you priority at the venues and allow you access to the conference itself. Some of the talks are interesting.

Now I realise why they market the shows in the way they do...didn't realise people actually fell for it!

I'm well aware, bands or members of bands go about doing this as it nets them a lot of money for very little effort- I have a few friends in small-medium sized indie bands who make £250-500 for a couple of hours sets which is good money at the end of the day. But if you look at a gig listing in a shop like rounder/resident and go and buy the tickets then and there without realising then it can be a bit dissapointing!!

Most events do actually specify it's a DJ set though.

Yes I know, but they often put the name of the band bigger than the (Dj Set) bit to try and catch the unsuspecting ones out:

the ocean rooms used to be a nightmare for false advertising, at holdup over the last few years we have had the ethos of getting bands we really like and tell them just play the records you love and influenced you, some have worked better than others, andy rourke was fantastic, russel from bloc party well dodgy, funniest of all was howard marks who played a hard techno set in an indie club.

we only put the guests on for an hour, and we only do it occassionally but i for one have found it dead interesting and good fun over the years. plus we only charge a fiver to get in so quit your moaning you mardy fuckers.
