Fair enough. I'm not celebrating the demise of Withdean in order to spend my Saturdays outside in the cold & wet, away from comforts such as seats and the lunchtime Sky kickoff! Each to their own!!:whisky:

I see your point but however many thousand home fans are not going to fit in one bar, ther will need to be plenty of drinking holes close to the ground? It seems crazy to me that in a time where many pubs are struggling this pub is choosing to turn away a lot of trade?!

I am not sympathising with the man at all, but I don't think he needs it. His niche is lecturers/the more "intellectual" sussex uni students in the evenings, and walkers/lunchers during the days.

Whilst its another inconvenience to Albion fans, I can almost respect the fact that he hasn't done a U-Turn and tried to cash in on what he's opposed for so long.

Anyways, my point was that its SHITE, and after one visit most people wouldn't want to drink there anyways.

He has always struck me as one of those landlords you get sometimes completely temperamentally unsuited to a job in the pub game.

So... the University of Sussex aren't going to cash in and open their bars then...?

They probably are, but they suck as well. (Apart from the one miles away, right at the back of the campus).

didn't one of those London Rd pubs near Withdean decide to keep closed on matchday . . . until they saw how much the other pub was raking in?

Similar thing happened at Gillingham where some pubs did better business when Albion were playing at 'home'.

Didnt I read somewhere that he isa wealthy man and doesnt need the pub to survive. 3 of us went in there once when he had a petition going and signed it in the names of 3 BHA players Oatway, Carpenter and Rogers the idea being that we could highlight those names and thus ridicule and invalidate the petition if needed.

The old landlord at the Crown and Anchor didn't open his doors after the Mansfield game until 7.30pm on Saturdays and not at all evening games that 1st season. He then had bouncers on the door the next season.

In late 2001 he did a runner with most of the contents of the safe ............................allegedly !! He defo did a runner though

slightly different but The placards for The Argus mention a pub manager and the takings vanishing but I cant find anything on The Argus website about it. I assume it was in the last couple of days.

That was The Hobgoblin in York Place (formerly The Northern). Manager had it away with 17 grand last Monday - or rather, manager's missing and 17 grand is missing.

I think that the attitude of the Swan's landlord makes it even more imperative that there's a decent boozer at the ground. The Hiker's Rest would be a great option if they served decent beer. I wonder if another pub could be built in north Moulsecoomb - there's plenty of space there - it would probably do a good trade.

*BAD FAN ALERT*

During the summer my wife and I go to the Swan nearly every Friday night, usually after taking the dogs for a walk in Stanmer Park. We like it because the beer's ok (Palmers) they do excellent and well-priced Thai food and it's a complete throwback to the 1970s. It's still got three bars (for those of you who remember the days when pubs had public and saloon bars), those 'hilarious' signs and even the till is one of the old-fashioned ones where you have to add it up in your head and then ring up one figure. Plus there's Edwardian pornography on the walls. It's well worth a visit for the social history side if nothing else.

Anyway, because of its design inside the pub is TINY, it makes the Sportsman look like an aircraft hanger. It is simply not capable of dealing with crowds. Even with people crammed in standing room only it could only cope with about 100, so whether it's open or closed on a match day is almost irrelevant - you won't get in anyway.

It's a shit boozer anyway (unless its changed in the last two years or so). Even if it was open I'd much have a few minutes less drinking time and have a few pints in Lewes or Brighton.

your right there, no smoking anywhere near the swan either, the landlord is anti football ground and very anti smoking.. plus the pub can only fit in about 50 people tops !!!!:nono:

I wouldn't be surprised if a forward thinking brewey didn't make a bid for the place, and redevelop it as a football pub. The locals would go mad, but once a fortnight they would make a fortune with nothing else anywhere nearby - providing they employ a better system than they manage at The Sportsman

He left suddenly, but did not do a runner, he is still contactable at his latest pub up in Cuckfield way.

Would you need planning permission ?

Would you need planning permission ?

You would also need to quadruple the pub in size, and given that it is pretty contained, I would bet heavily against this happening.

My understanding is that The Swan is owned by John Woodruff, who is the landlord. It's been in his family for generations. I gather that, when he retires, he intends to close the business down and carry on living in the place. I have heard that he might do that in a couple of years time.

one thing i will say about the swan..they do great food in there at nice prices, johns not a bad guy if you know him, i mean he s like a lot of the locals and me and many others o0n here, if we lived in a peaceful village for donkeys yrs and a football club came along with proposals for a stadium then we would be up in arms...its a case of ..not on our doorstep wherever you live !!!
