2 hours in, 44 votes and 95% in favour of Roy. im a little surprised its that much (im sure Rednakpp is popular), but proves without a doubt that the "people" haven't necessarily been consulted by the tabloid sports editors. (and they been rumbled by the non-tabloid for some time who ahve been advocating Roy and other alternatives.)

Roy is a gentleman, and I prefer him to Harry as a person, but in terms of managerial ability, I've gone for Redknapp. I just think that, even though the media are being unduly harsh on poor old Woy, this decision was made by the FA because a) Redknapp cost too much money, and b) he said no, no, no.

I'm worried that this will end up like one "Wally with a Brolly" era. What the England team needs is stability - a long-serving manager who can progress the squad forwards. I doubt Hodgson will be able to step up to the plate. Good luck to him, and call me cynical, but I'm just fearing the worst.

Luckily he's not a man to blow his own trumpet, for sure, and he thinks it's triffic that Roy has got the job and he never thought about putting himself forward for a second.

Although all the media were saying "Harry is the fans choice", I spoke to remakably few people who echoed this.

Having thought about it a bit more, I think the FA have done exactly the right thing, in the right way ...... for once.

Roy was the right choice in the end but they should have approached him quicker and not let the selection proccess drag out for so long, in the meantime speculation about Redknapp grew to the point where lots of the players have come out in support of him which means Hodgson starts on the back foot.

With weeks to go, and motivation of senior players being about all we can hope for as no time to build anything, I think Harry would get us a lot further in Euro 2012.

It's hard to disagree with this. Redknapp would have been a good choice if we were only looking at 2012. Luckily the F.A were looking longer term. Hodgson is the better choice for a longer term project. He's not my first choice but if the candidate has to be English then he is the pick of the bunch.

Hdgson has a track record of making his teams cohesive and hard to beat, he gets the most out of average players and has a wide and successful knowledge of European and World football. With him in charge I'm hopeful that the England team will evolve and the new players coming in, lacking the big name status and ego's of their predecessors, will be forged into a coherent team capable of giving anyone a decent game and restoring some pride into our national team.

I just hope the media lay off him, the way they've reacted so far has been very disappointing.

I've always been banging on about Hodgson, how is that we have one of the most respected coaches in Europe and we (The English) can see how good he is!

Liverpool should of held on to him, if anyone cares to remember that J.W Henry didn't buy Liverpool till October after the transfer window. So the poor bugger was left with a pittance to improve a mediocre squad. Could you imagine if he had the same money that the miserable Jock had to spunk up the wall...

Out of those two Hodgson is undoubtedly the better choice. However, rather peversely, part of me wanted them to give it to Redknapp simply to lance the boil. No matter what happens they'll be people who will say "Huh, Harry would have done better" in much the same way as they are people who are convinced that England would have won every tournament going in the 70s and 80s if only the FA had appointed Brian Clough.

As Capello (and Don Revie) demonstrated - being a successful club manager does not automatically mean you'll be a successful international manager. The FA are right to point out that in terms of previous international experience Hodgson is the best candidate England have ever had. We've tried the 'best club manager' approach (Capello, Revie), we've tried the 'people's choice' approach (Keegan), and we've tried the 'sophisticated foreigner' approach (Sven), so the 'previous experience' approach is at least a refreshing break from the past.
