It's now being claimed that Materazzi called Zidane a "terorist".

If that is true then Zidane's response was foolish but it hardly reflects any glory on Materazzi, a player who has a long record of being an obnoxious little c*nt.

On 5live this morning that was being reported. Seemly some lip reader read his lips as Zidane was walking away from the incident, telling a french player what had been said.

All a bit of a shame and takes the gloss of a decent tournement.

This incident will be discussed for many, many years! In years to come the whole World Cup will be distilled down to this single incident.

As Dave says, it was being reported on R5.

I think the story may develop during the day.

Nah - not at all!! They should have and did beat us - I'm proud we held them to 90 odd minutes of not scoring though...

I love Italy, love the food, shopping, sights and country - I just don't think the Italian footballers and their antics deserved last nights win and the world cup.....and given the match fixing allegations, I'm not alone in these thoughts...

the trouble is if you you use that argument, then which club did deserve it?

Henri fell to the ground clutching his face when someone tackled his leg and the French were diving all the time, Portugal were a disgrace, Germany, Brazil,England.....in fact I cant remember 1 team who did not employ gamesmanship, therefore out of all of them, you then have to go on whoever comes out on top, which was Italy.

When did Germany "cheat" in this world cup? I missed that.

I have only met one Italian in my life. he was a snide and a cheat. I have met one Algerian Frenchman has well. He had a tendency to go around hitting people when he felt insulted.

Of course, I have met Englishmen like this as well, but not really quite the same. The English bullies were more like Rooney, and I have hit the cheats myself. Could not help it my fist went out when it triggered something.

Agreed and thats why I said that thats what happens in world cups! I would have liked to have seen Germany there but to be honest I don't know who deserved it - although I'll say again I think france were the better team last night... (aside from Zidane's moment of being a 42 carot plonker!!)

Every time a player goes down when they have been lightly brushed. I swear they are made of paper. There were odds and sods of Germans doing that, but nothing so 'Klinsman-esque' as his pathetic dive in the World Cup Final of 1990.

So, in this world cup, nothing then. Good: I watched Germany in this world cup closer (Klose?) than most on here and didn't see any of that typical Michael Owen cheating behaviour. :)

I didn't think Germany were too bad in the cheating stakes (if you want to call it cheating which to me it is) but it was everywhere and in most teams - and spoiled a lot of it for me. When diving, requesting red cards, and the like are discussed more than the outcome of games, then for me it ruins the tournament. Some people say its part of the game now, but given the general discontent of the majority of fans re the cheating, then it shouldn't be. Teams who employ these tactics should be penalised and unfortunately Italy are one of them.

Leaving aside his constant red cards over the years, the worst incident was just a couple of years ago in an Inter v Siena game. Materazzi wasn't even playing, he was on the bench.

There was a Champions League match this season where he elbowed someone, straight across the face as he was running past. He is a nasty piece of work.

What a great night it was last night. The Italians defied all the odds and critics to win their 4th WC. It'll probably be their last for a while as their is a new generation seemingly breaking through at the moment.

The party down in London last night was amazing. Especially all the ZZ chants that were going on. Didn't get in till late this morning. Least I had no work today. Now I gotta try get all the colouring out of my hair.
