Horsham YMCA 3 Saltdean 3

YM second bottom of the league v top of the league Saltdean.

First game in charge for Dean Carden - who has made 508 appearances for YMCA as a player.

On Tuesday’s frosty night at Gorings Mead Horsham YMCA stunned the runaway league leaders, all star Saltdean, by holding them to a richly entertaining draw after scoring early and late in the game.

Enduring nine consecutive league defeats, YM supporters have had little to cheer about, but their spirits were boosted by a determined, committed performance after new Manager Dean Carden had been busy signing new players during football lockdown. YM got off to the best possible start when Jack Ryder broke through casual Saltdean defending to score 25 seconds from the kick off. Saltdean, though, gradually came more into the game, moving forward with increased possession, but McCreadie failed to maximise a heading opportunity and Pamment blasted well wide.

Will Read headed just off target for YM in between two Saltdean corners, averted by brave home defending. The visitors kept pressing and were not to be denied – after corkscrewing into the top netting from a free kick just outside the area, they drew level on the half hour mark when Pamment hooked in from the left. A YM corner and forays resulting from ineffective Saltdean clearances came and went, until YM escaped when keeper Aaron Jeal pushed a shot onto the post and away. Then YM cleared off the line, before an impressive diving header by Harry Shooman gave Saltdean the lead, the score remaining 2-1 in their favour at the break following another Saltdean corner.

Resuming, YM had to be at their best to prevent the visitors from going further ahead, with Charlie Cooke thwarting a threatening attack and Jeal saving with his feet from close range. But, in the 57th minute, Ryan Warwick scrambled the ball home to give Saltdean a two goal advantage. However, to their great credit YM kept challenging and were rewarded when a free kick was parried out to the unmarked Ryder, who made no mistake.

Saltdean had come expecting to win and when a header grazed the YM upright to no effect, the ref had to quell overheating in the away dugout. YM were reduced to 10 men through sub Archie Cooke’s too robust tackle, but they still pushed for the equaliser, with the dying minutes resembling a hectic cup tie. And, YM got their just desserts three minutes into extra time when a header was palmed off for a corner, following which the ball landed at the feet of Callum Jeal, who celebrated his come back into a YM shirt by coolly banging in a dream long range strike to share the points.

A very late Saltdean corner rattled YM’s nerves amid two excellent saves by Aaron Jeal, but the 3-3 draw was a fair result, Manager Dean Carden telling us: “I said that Saltdean would have more of the possession, but I emphasised that I expected us to compete – and that’s what we did! We matched them and took our chances. Callum Jeal was brought in to mix it up in mid field, without anticipating a goal from him, so that really was the icing on the cake. I’m delighted with that performance – we fully deserved the point.”

Two more YM home games beckon – on Saturday they welcome Lingfield, then on Tuesday (15th) they have a stiff challenge when they host Haywards Heath in the second round of the Sussex Senior Cup.

Not sure what they put in Littlehampton's half time tea, but they smashed in 6 unanswered goals in the second half, running out 7-1 winners! Felt a bit sorry for the Billingshurst keeper, who was actually pretty decent and kept it below double figures. Sets up next week's 3rd Round FA Vase tie nicely.

After a bit of a bizarre opening goal Steyning let it go in the second half, eventually losing 2-1 to Peacehaven and Telscombe. Enjoyable game though, and great to be out.

Yes it was a bonkers second half. I think it was heavily influenced by a Billingshurst player getting sin binned - Littlehampton scored a couple of quick goals, the visitors heads dropped and then Littlehampton put them to the sword.
I really enjoyed it - I'll be back next week for the FA Vase fixture!

Why did some leagues vote to not play until new year ?

The Isthmian League has confirmed in a statement that league fixtures will remain suspended until further notice.

Following the statement issued by the Isthmian, Northern Premier and Southern Football Leagues yesterday, further clarification can now be given in relation to the voting following the Zoom meetings held by all 3 Trident Leagues with their Member Clubs to discuss the impact of the raising of the lockdown on 2nd December.

There were 224 Clubs voting across the 3 Leagues and of these 172 agreed with the proposition to continue the pause in fixtures, 51 disagreed and there was 1 abstention. Broken down by League, 57 Clubs in the Northern Premier League voted to agree with 4 disagreeing, 68 Clubs in the Southern League agreed with 14 disagreeing and in the Isthmian League it was much closer with 47 Clubs agreeing, 33 disagreeing and 1 abstention.

The “Agree” vote was therefore 76% and it has been agreed that the three Leagues will not sanction fixtures at this time.

It is intended that the situation is kept under review in line with Government review on the Tier allocations and restrictions. Accordingly, the next review is set for 16 December and then 30 December. It is the hope of all the Leagues that a date in January can be set for a return to fixtures with Clubs who wish being allowed to play before that date but this will not be until there is a change in the Tiers and/or some progress in the funding of the Clubs at this level.

The Government has allocated £25m to Sport England to fund Steps 1 to 6 of the National Leagues System, of which £14m is set for Steps 3-6 but is heavily weighted in favour of loans, not grants. The FA is working tirelessly with DCMS and Sport England to have the funding presented as Grants. However, these negotiations take time, and it is not expected to have an answer or clarification of details of even the loans until mid-January.

The deep concern of all involved in the NLS is that circumstances may mean that it is not possible to conclude the current format of competition in a manner in which promotion and relegation can be achieved throughout the whole pyramid with Step 2 being brought up to 48 Clubs and Step 4 brought up to 240 Clubs.

If, therefore, no progress is made by the Government on the Tiers in either of the two December reviews, it is the intention of the Alliance Committee to circulate those concerned with a survey to gather the views of the Clubs as how best to finish the season. Options will include an alternative format competition and extending the season possibly into June 2021. However the implications of all such proposals will involve the cost of players contracts and the ability of some clubs to continue playing because of other issues of grounds and the need to prepare grass pitches for the following season.

The Leagues are mindful of the needs of all Clubs and are striving to find a solution which is fair to all.

I went to Horsham YMCA v Lingfield.

Decent crowd - including several who were there for the first time - I hope they return.

£7 entry

Beer available (to take out from the bar - you're not allowed to stand in bar and drink)

Quality of the football was to be honest mediocre, but it was really enjoyable - not surprising when you get two sending offs, a missed pen worse than Ulloa's (yes really) and countless goal mouth scrambles.

Here's match report.

In a highly entertaining game that included two red cards, a botched penalty and a hatful of near misses at either end, battling YMCA held visiting Lingfield to a draw at Gorings Mead last Saturday, after clawing their way back from being a goal down at half time

The opening minutes belonged to Lingfield and when a dangerous-looking YM back pass was not completely cleared pin ball action out to the left followed, enabling visiting centre forward James Allen to slot home in the fifth minute. In between two Lingfield corners, YM’s Alex Barbary responded, but could only get a weak shot away. YM, though, were coming more into the game but Ben Bacon saw his two strikes blocked and Callum Jeal found the side netting, before his brother Aaron had to rush out to save.

Then, shortly ahead of the midpoint of the first half, came a turning point in the game when Allen was floored in the box and somehow managed to blast the penalty high, wide and ugly. A Lingfield free kick just outside the area came to nothing before four corners were awarded – two for each side - with Allen failing to make contact with a threatening cross, and Sami Bakhit hoofing attempts well off target.

Twelve minutes before the break, Lingfield were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Daniel Nairne scythed down Brannon O’Neil, newly signed from Three Bridges. The stand in keeper was soon in action, as was Aaron Jeal, tipping the ball over for Lingfield’s fifth corner, YM trailing by the single goal at half time

The second half began with a YM corner and, with no change in the scoreline, subs were introduced, until, with around half an hour still on the clock, YM pressure allowed Barbary to break through to equalise. Lost possession then gave Lingfield an opportunity, but the lob just evaded the top left corner of the goal. With action switching to the other end, Barbary’s close range effort was stopped by the keeper’s lunging feet. The two YM subs caught the eye, with Kyle Sim being sent off with quarter of an hour remaining, and Adrian Todd unleashing a powerful shot just wide of the goal.

A frantic cup tie style ending followed, the ball somehow being kept out with four saves from Jeal and defenders. In a breakaway YM attack, Charlie Maguire couldn’t quite get the ball into an empty goal. Then, just before the final whistle, a mix up at the back gave Lingfield a golden chance, but they, too, spurned the probability, with the game ending one apiece.

YM Coach Lee Maguire was pleased with the outcome, telling us: “It was a bit sticky out there, but we created chances – and so did they. It could have gone either way, but it was good to be unbeaten again and earn another point.”

Saltdean Town head the table, four points clear of AFC Uckfield Town, with YM in the penultimate berth, ahead of East Preston and two points shy of Langney Wanderers.

Before YM travel to Eastbourne Town on Saturday they are in Sussex Senior Cup action on Tuesday, against Haywards Heath, 17th out of 19 in the Isthmian South East Division, with one win from seven starts

Why did some leagues vote to not play until new year ?

Clubs need paying punters through the door (not possible in tier 3) and them to be buying food and drink. Then you've got the ethical reasons around travelling between tiers.

Can easily see SCEFL and Isthmian being voided again this year.

Wonderful scenes, should be a good tie, Haywards Heath have been one of the poorer sides I've seen in the Isthmian this season, and with what looks like an upturn in form for YMCA, it could be an upset in the only trophy in football that matters.

I think HH will win comfortably - YM have several 'dual signed' players (from Three Bridges) who I would think won't be playing tonight as they won't want to be cup tied.

Enjoy the game.
