I always find that a bit of a strange comment as they only had one real hit while wood was there, two at a push. I bet lots of bands would like to lose it like they did.

I thought that at the time but do you really still believe that? A lot of this prog rock is IMO unlistenable now at least after the first 6 minutes & I usually get bored before that.

I recently picked up Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica - I recall it was once NME top album of all time - it is rubbish, & on CD I could only play it once. Same for Made in Japan - Deep Purple - the tracks are just far too long.

Ah, now you're talking. Trout Mask Replica is deservedly reckoned as the top rock album of all time by many such surveys. I've been playing it for more than 30 years and it still knocks me out. I could never tire of it. It will still sound fresh in 20 years' time.

Don't know how you can compare it Made in Japan though. The tracks on TMR are really short; a couple of minutes in length, MIJ is full of screamingly long rock tracks.

Agree with you about prog rock though: I'd rather listen to ELO than ELP. Please save us from 15 minute keyboard solos or, even worse, drum solos.

ELO were great. Zoom was a fantastic album. Sounded like it had been recorded in 1978 and then hidden away, only to be released many years later. Hope there's more to come from Jeff Lynne yet if he can still churn them out like that.

I saw them at The Dome on their very first tour, with Roy Wood. They came on with bright green hooded robes, and played to an astounding 15 or so people who had turned up! Kudos to them for playing, when they could just as easily have refunded us and called it a loss.

Though they played few Move tunes (I was a fan of them, which is much of the reason for going) they were pretty good. I'd only heard '10538 Overture' otherwise.

Any fan of ELO should definitely look into The Idle Race first 2 albums, which are formative indications of what ELO were to become. The 3rd I.R. lp was made without Jeff Lynne, is still excellent, but not like the previous albums.

In Bev Bevan's book, he said they once did a gig where the band out-numbered the audience....he said they felt like applauding the "crowd"

If any ELO fans can get hold of it, Bevan's book called "The ELO story" is a real good read...from the start of the band, the move, the idle race etc, all about Roy Wood and how the band eventually made it through some amaizing struggles.

I remember buying it in 1980 with my paper round money so there might be a few knocking around on fleabay or something.
