Stroke of genius or desperate to exploit our batting frailties against left arm spin?

Xavier Doherty | Australia Cricket | Cricket Players and Officials | ESPN Cricinfo

It's only one player with problems against left-arm spinners - and I bet Doherty gets on very quickly against him.

Australia had to pick a spinner though: Hauritz can't buy a wicket at the moment and Smith got slaughtered playing for the A team. They could have gone for O'Keefe though but Doherty's got more experience (and perhaps they already have enough New SOuth Welshmen in the team).

Much more interesting is how many test players have a first name beginning with X - I can think of two more off the top of my head but I've no idea how to find if there are more.

I thought quite a few of our batsmen had fallen to left arm spin. Strauss, Cook and KP being the front runners.

Bearders would have been able to answer that poser

Cook doesn't last long enough these days to see the spinners come on. Don't know about Strauss, I'd have to look at his last few innings but it never struck me that he got out a lot to lefties.

One astonishing statistic that I have seen is that since Warne's retirement in 2007, Australia have used 9 specialist spinners (including Doherty) in test matches - that's a staggering number in under three years. You can see if you can name them - I got eight before looking up the answer.

England have used three. I think, in the same period.

Just poking around YouTube for a few classic Twelfth Man clips to get in the Ashes mood and found this (a genuine clip) of Tony Greig and Bill Lawrie commentating on an Aus-SA game. More Twelfth Man than the Twelfth Man itself :lolol:

So exciting this series as we really do have a magnificent chance of winning, cue Australia 370 odd for 2 at stumps
