Hi Thailand experts. So, could any of you give me some advice, I am looking at jobs in any of the following areas. Does anyone know of these places which are nice, which are to avoid etc?

1) Hat Yai
2) Songkhla
3) Phattalung
4) Nakhon Sri Thammarat
5) Trang
6) Ranong
7) Surat Thani
8) Satun

Ignore the South of the country down near Hat Yai etc unless you want to be target practice for muslim extremists

I do not know whether to take you seriously or not? I either have the option to work in South of Thailand or in Bangkok.

Bangkok was great EXCEPT koh san which was a shit-hole.

Samui fine for that type of thing, excellent day trips and the nearby islands like Koh Phangan for a day and Koh Tao for long as you can, are well worth it. Would use Samui more as a base for those.

Going Chang Mai this summer plus Laos and probably Cambodia, Vietnam. Think I'll give pattaya a miss though still.

Ayuttia (sp) was great for a day of temples and tuk tuks but not sure what else is there. A couple of quid and one hour by mini bus from central BKK and a easy day trip. Was going to do Hua Hin but was bit of flooding so didn't brave it.

I was in about 1% of travellers who was on their own, but meant I just got chummy with the guides or locals everywhere and they all offer you their food etc. Amazed when I eat stuff hotter than them and speak 3 or 4 lines of Thai just to try. Show an interest in them not beer and hookers and you'll get on with everyone. friendliest people I met, though probably take advantage of drunk louts tbh. Oh and if you can beat the bar girls at pool (properly) then you're on to a winner IF play it right and not a cocky dick head. Taxi drivers can try to be dicks if they think you're an ignorant tourist in shorts, but say hello in Thai and dress appropriatly for their culture and you get the trips about 1/3 the price. Samui expensive for this but BKK dirt cheap.

Good advice. Just ben told that it is more likely I will be placed in Bangkok Metropolitan Area than anywhere in the south of the country now. Are there lots of places within fairly easy distance to travel from MAIN Bangkok as I have heard it can get pretty hot and oppresive there at times.

Teaching job. Where was your fave place? Any advice?

Favourite place chiang Mai. Whole day with elephants, afternoon with tigers (not drugged better than bkk drugged ones), long neck village, two day trek stayed with locals.

Vietnam halong bay was good but Hanoi worst place been to by far. Got conned three times in two hour period.

1. They said i paid with 10k note not 100k. Told them to f*** off and walked off.
2. Restaurant waited 1 hr 30 after ordering. They then brought something over which didn't order so we just walked off told them to go do one.
3. Guy said a price for lift on his bike. Got off and he upped it by ten fold. Couldn't do anything there as about six guy came over.

Cambodia decent. Fired machine guns. Said we could blow up cows with rocket launchers for a few hundred dollars. Phnom Penh tht was, place was full of drug dealers. Angkor watt was nice. Shit bars though.

Pattaya was an experience.

Bangkok just got battered a few times on soi10. Decent bars London prices though. friend showed us round who just started there as a teacher in Bangkok though.

Nice life. Would move there myself but all accounting jobs you have to speak Thai :(

Cheers for the mini-review. Surprised it is London prices for a beer? Surely there are lots of cheap places in Bangkok for a beer or two though?

275-300 baht for a beer (bottle, small)
450-700 baht for cocktail

roof top bars, and the two clubs on soi 10 prices. it is half the price in cheaper areas i guess.

some cool road side bars with flashy lights on the vans were about 2 quid a bottle.

bangkok isn't cheap to drink, nor was anywhere in thailand I went. Cheapest drink was a can of beer 50 baht (£1). Cambodia (Angkor watt) was pretty pricey too, about 4 quid a beer.

tuk-tuk drivers get 200 baht per suit shop they take you to too. I got 3 tailor fitted shirts, ideal shirts, would have bought 10 more if i had known they wouldn't shrink in the wash! were about £20 each (started at £50 each but obviously wasn't going to pay that).
