Do the Yanks have any idea what's going on.

I caught some of the big fight build up, plenty of what we would call, the usual grief, went Mayweather's way. But to be fair he did jump into the ring and start singing, 'there's only one Mayweather'.

My understanding of US sport is that other than the odd shout of DE FENCE there is no organised chanting.

If that is the case I'd be curious to know what they think of 50,000 pasty white northerners with bad teeth and beer guts, all striped down to dodgy shorts, singing as one?

One of the finest culture clashes I ever saw was on a subway train packed at one end with Scots footy supporters and at the other with USA supporters after USA v Scotland at RFK stadium. The Americans started with their lame "U-S-A, U-S-A" chant to which the Scots responded very vocally with "Who the Fvcking Hell Are You...?" much to the bemusement and panic of the yanks.

From what I can gather there is no real organised chanting at their main sports of american football, basketball & baseball. Whilst obviously sport is important to them the public seem to view them as just events like concerts or plays...They appear to turn up eat hot-dogs and then go home and they do not show the passion as we do over here for football, cricket & rugby.

In a rather odd twist the only sport in which there is singing and passion is football!!! This, I have been told is due to all the immigrants watching their local teams. There is a large Polish community in Chicago and they regularly watch Chicago Fire at home lending vociferous support. Other teams even have ‘Ultras’ as some towns & cities have Latin American communities, whilst others have Hispanic populations. I think this kind of support is now rubbing off on the americans!!

I do remember after the shambles of the U.S Grand Prix a few years back mass chanting of 'we want refund' from the U.S public, which I think is the best display of mass chanting the U.S had ever seen.

Couple of Friends of mine were at the Lewis vs. Holyfield fight at Madison Square Garden in 1999, apparently there was loads of football chanting then as well which left the septics nonplussed.

My mate was woken from his slumbers one night whilst there at 3.30 am when just outside his Hotel window he hears "Liiiveeerpoool Liiverpoool" and the inevitavle reply "Shit", yes the Mancs and the Scousers had found each other!

Not quite chanting as such but certainly a lot of passion when I have seen american football games out there.

you get it in the mls - but every other sport just seems to be de-fence clap clap clap to some tinny sounding music - basketball being the prime example

hockey can get quite a good atmosphere going, but it usually comes down to the boring and monotomous chants again of "lets go penguins clap clap clap clap clap"

Indeed. Washington's fans are pretty good though. And so are Chicagos. Seattle announced an MLS franchise starting in 15 months time and have already sold 9,500 season ticket deposits for their first season So I suspect their support will be quite solid and noisy.

I'm stuck with U.S sports right now with ESPN, TNT & CNN being the only 3 channels we get here. (Don't even start me on CNN, Comedy News Network!).

They don't really do chanting, but some of the games have had a fantastic atmosphere. I watched a COLLEGE football game, (the football with helmets & padding) the other week & there were OVER 100,00......for a COLLEGE game. They were going f***ing crazy! It's just a completely different culture though; far less tribal than us, even though they have a thing called "rivalry week" where supposed local (ish) teams play each other. They should attend a Palace Brighton game if they want intense rivalry!
In the NFL I think the 2 teams known for atmosphere are Green Bay Packers & New Orleans Saints, (the latter might be something to do with the indoor stadium).
Basketball is pretty much "de-fence, clap clap". Baseball, pretty much sit, eat, drink, clap & holler when a home run is hit.
