Yep. He was my first football hero, loved him and still do today. Gutted he’s not presenting it anymore, will miss him.

Though glad about the three coming in to replace him - all three excellent presenters in their own way.

I love MOTD and not just because of sentimentality or tradition, there is no better packaged up football highlights show out there.
I think it is important there is a primary focus for top flight and FA cup football on the BBC.
And it is also important that it is impervious to 'other voices' (never namechecking other media)
MOTD is the church of football we attend once a week for affirmation of our love of the game.
Former players and analysts enhance my understanding and enjoyment
Of course it is particularly special now we are on it every week.

Without MOTD I can see annoying gobshites employed for perverse reasons on random new shows
on various TV and internet outlets, all 'me, me, me'
(like they tried with Jenas till he had his collar felt);
oriented towards 'the kidz' or 'white van man'.
Can you imagine the latter with someone pointing out how the Albion missed a trick this season,
and should of been beating bottom 3 sides?

Whatever anyone says, MOTD is driven by the football.
It is a magazine programme that treats football with respect.
It does not indulge polemicists (there is a place for them - on TalkShite).
It is not and never was about the presenters.
Lineker and Lynam before him were gentle hosts who treated their 'guests' as equals.

I'm confident the 3 new presenters can keep MOTD going perfectly well.
They have all done it (or the Sunday version) before.
There are lots of smart former players who can do excellent punditry.

So that's Wright and Lineker gone and Shearer and Richards still there next season ? Maybe some early nights for me

Just far enough away from LDC

This is absolutely spot on. 👌

Clearly the people who worked with him rated him and his interview style, especially the long form ones is relaxed, informative and entertaining.

A class act and he’ll be missed. But after 25 years it is time for a change.

An enormously good presenter who was very knowledgeable about football, having played with some success at the very highest level, and able to talk about it intelligently - what’s not to like?

and a thoroughly decent bloke who has been a great friend, encourager and supporter to all around him and widely respected by leading figures in the game from the tribute last night at the end of the programme.

i‘m wondering (and hoping) if now he will feel able to contribute even more outrageous (or alternatively well-balanced and insightful tweets) to annoy those who have always objected to him.

I loved how he winds up all the right people. I remember when he was suspended from MOTD and all the other pundits and commentators went on strike in support so MOTD was just highlights with no commentary or analysis. The right-wing Twitter crowd vainly attempted to say it was much better, but most of them had clearly never watched a game of football in their lives.

Pity Shearers not gone either…..i rate only Hart of the current Saturday night team….to me Lineker isn’t in the same league as Desmond Lynam…but then I guess that’s from a time when you were limited to MOTD and The Big Match …..I personally won’t miss him ..but then Ive not been a regular viewer of MOTD for some while…I’ll leave you all to grieve 😉

It was funny hearing Tory MPs commenting about MOTD when they'd never seen it before
