I think it is a tap on the left (or right) shoulder. One of them refers to the batting team and one for the fielding team.

When is a fielding team awarded five runs?

It's right hand on left should across your chest... to avoid confusion with 'one short'.

hhmm... interesting that you need to distinguish between batting and fielding side penalties..

From BBC website...

BBC Sport Academy | Cricket | Rules | Umpire signals | Penalty runs

The umpire signals five penalty runs by bringing one arm across his chest and touching his shoulder.
If he taps that shoulder, the penalty runs are awarded to the batting side.
If he simply places the hand there, runs are given to the fielding team.

Is there an explanation as to why it would be given to the fielding team? I can only think it would be if the batsmen removes his helmet and it hits that.

EDIT: Ah question answered!

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Five penalty runs are awarded to the fielding side if the batting team:

Attempt to "steal" a run or run short
Deliberately waste time after having been warned
Damage the protected area of the pitch after two warnings.

Ah ha. I have obviously been subjected to relatively honest cricket (both playing and watching) all these years. It's just not cricket :nono:

How fateful was that over?

Can any cricket boffins confirm the position in the table now?

For Sussex to have any chance of a win, I think we need 5 Yorkshire wickets today and for them to be no more than 120-130 in front.

Agree?

Assuming no rain ...

We need to bowl them out by lunchtime tomorrow, for no more than 250. That will leave us two sessions to get the 206 needed to win.

Target for close of play tonight:- five wickets down, no more than 150 scored.

Assuming rain ...

It's a draw. Sussex 11 points; Yorkshire 11 points.
