Hutton missed out with "recurrence of lumbago" according to the Wisden report, which dates the match almost as much as England's attack including two leg spinners. I'm less clear on what prompted the other 4 changes to the XI.

Disappointingly, no Sussex representative, Sheppard made his debut in the next match. The next were 8 changes to the XI for that game, including the captain.
