High up on the South Downs.
I've sat near Steve for the whole time we've been playing at Withdean. Yes our area of E Block can get quite vocal at times but yesterday we were all fairly quiet. I can't believe the steward's reaction as Steve did absolutely nothing wrong. About five of them were staring at us from the running track for what seemed like half an hour.

Steve's a true die-hard Albion fan and I believe deserves an apology from the club ASAP.

Agree with this. A genuine, long-standing Albion fan like Steve/Mouth doesn't deserve this. Perhaps somebody with better computer skills than me could start an online petition.

Gus Poyet indicated that the crowd need to be noisier. Yet the noisiest and most passionate fans are slung out at home games

The chief steward is an absolute embarrassment. I've come to the conclusion that he thinks he is the most important living being in Withdean when matches are on, and that us fans are just an inconvenience.

I would hope that the club would review his position but I am not holding my breath. It seems that some of the other stewards have a similar attitude.

haha please. Will you just endlessly defend the clubs stewards whatever happens?

No. I don't endlessly defend the whatever happens. I defend them when they are criticised for doing what they are employed to do (i.e. keep an eye on the crowd, asking people in an all-seater stadium to sit down in line with the laws).

I've not passed judgement or defended them for the handling of this steve the mouth situation, I don't know enough about what happened to do so.

I merely responded to the, imo, ridiculous criticism that they keep looking at the crowd. I will probably keep defending them when they are just doing their jobs for as long as people criticise them for just doing their jobs. (No, I don't consider bullying, targetting, or over reactions part of the job).

There is a significant difference between "looking" and "staring".

When you have understood that, then come back continue your nonsense.

There's also a difference between repeatedly looking over the same section of the crowd and staring, a difference between trying to make something out from a distance and staring. They stand in front of a block and having to keep an eye on it for 90 minutes, of course they're going to be staring at certain places time an again.

Watch the game and you won't notice their stares/looks/glances/ogling/inspection/pointing/gesturing/gawking/focusing/scrutinising. I'd imagine if you're constantly looking at them instead of the game you paid £25 to watch/£500 for a season ticket to watch they're going to wondering why.

Yes because then you clearly are about commit a major crime and should be marched with the coppers to the exits.

It is a football match Acker.

.......right....so you haven't understood the difference between "lookin" and "staring".......and you are obviously still going to continue your.....lengthy/tedious/boring/un-interesting/monotonous/colourless/passionless/pointless/self-effacing/stultifying posts...........

Joy.

But when they spend their time pointing, calling for reinforcements, conferring, sending for the Chief Steward, pointing again, conferring again, doing nothing for ten minutes, conferring again, sending four of their number up two staircases, escorting one person out, conferring again, pointing somewhere else, dispersing, reassembling ....

... it's very intrusive and spoils the game for the hundreds of us who don't want to be watching a performance like that, but have no choice in the matter.

Exactly. No one has a problem when the stewards stand there with a vacant expression but when they have their little get-togethers with the police and start the finger pointing it's a distraction.

I'd argue that we are one of the most well behaved set of home supporters anywhere in the country - but these guys act like we're Cardiff or Millwall. Ridiculous.

Don't be so ridiculous. You're trying to say I want to stare at their pointless antics every time I go to Withdean?

I would happily go for 90 minutes without even giving them a glance, however, when so many converge right in front of a block, it is impossible for them not to enter your peripheral vision. When they do this whenever anyone is so disgustingly behaved as to stay standing for more than 20 seconds, or even, god forbid, say a naughty swear word, that is what gets people's backs up.

I can't quite remember what time during our Withdean stay this started, but it certainly wasn't like this in the early years. I wouldn't be surprised if it coincides with the time that it became a morgue like atmosphere every week.

Still, as long as everyone is safe and sound, and no-one is saying any naughty words I guess everything is ok

The criticism - that you seem to be ignoring - is that an ever growing group of response stewards stood staring at the same point with repeated pointing for several minutes. Then moved to another location and continued the same process again but from a different angle. Causing a few people to stand and hurl abuse at them - causing more stewards, more pointing and then the involvement of the police - causing more unrest. This (as I'm sure you must be aware but are ignoring for your own benefit) has nothing to do with the standard yellow coated stewards who just monitor the crowd. This is to do with a group of response stewards who rather than just dealing with whatever misdemeanour they perceived, decided to just grow an increasingly more visible group and inflame a situation that need not occur in the first place. They were not covert in their actions - it smacked to me to be of a show of "power" that caused more unrest than whoever was their target. They are there to stop problems - not cause them. See a problem - remove it. Do not grow a group of more people to stare and point and inflame what will always be a volatile group of people.

maybe Akcer would prefer a tea dance no chance of any swearing then ... ( unless some-one dunks their rich tea too long and it plops to the bottomof the MUG) Then the stewards could kick them out for mis-use of tea cups

I've not denied that. This thread started without those details, simply people accusing the stewards of staring at them.
Look at all my posts so far:
You mean people whose job it is to look out for any trouble in the crowd were staring at the crowd? How dare they?!

They were causing trouble by looking over a crowd they are supposed to keep an eye on? Or do you mean when they actually took action against an alleged offender?

If it's the latter, that isn't what my point is.

If it's the former, can you explain how staring into a crowd is causing trouble when their job is to stare into the crowd? I was responding to the criticism that they spent the whole game staring into the crowd. That's their job.
Lord Bracknell provided an explanation.
At this point I was accused of endlessly defending the stewards no matter what and my part in this discussion became about a general points, as I mention here:

What the hell? Because I think it's perfectly acceptable for stewards to look at the crowd or that if there is suspicious behaviour such as spending the game staring at stewards instead of watching the game that it makes sense for them to stare at that person, I suddenly want a tea party and no swearing?

Sorry but at the end of the day its not WHAT you do but the WAY that you do it. Sadly a good deal of the stewards look at people and think "he looks like trouble" and then proceed to create trouble where there was none in the first place.

Would you stand and stare at anyone in public? Surely you can get a good idea of what someone is doing by a passing glimpse?

I sit in D block and the stewards were a total joke yesterday. It started with 2 of them continually pointing and staring and then calling others over time and time again. They were annoying everybody and spoiled my day. These days you are not allowed to show passion at football, especially Withdean, thats why we only get 6,200 home fans at the place.

The treatment of Mouth was a disgrace and I will be writing to the club to officially complain about the actions and behaviour of the stewards. If the Albion want everyone to sit in silence and politely clap then they can think again as I go along to support my team.

I really F***ing hate Withdean and the stewards and other than the fact that Brighton is my club I would just give up with this sh*t and go watch football where you are allowed to be passionate, have a beer and have a laugh ie non league football. But I support Brighton and CANT and WILL NOT support anyone else! The club need to train the stewards into how to act ie not deliberately wind everyone up and have little ego trips on finding an "incident" so they can use the power they think they have during games. What sad people some of these stewards are, not all of them, but a small minority at Withdean are a disgrace.

Rant over and back to watching the Reading festival on freeview!

I cant help but think that they act the way they do because they get away with it.

I dont go to Withdean anymore thankfully, but i have heard they are not so bad when faced with the likes of Leeds or Millwall. Why is this? because if they try to get big and bully one of their fans they might just get a slap in return.

It used to be like this in the North Stand at the Goldstone, when the Police tried to move in on someone they would often have to try and fight off a large group of lads who tried to keep their pal with them. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didnt but in the end the Police would rather try the softly softly approach, which often still gets the repuired result.

I know that whole attitude amongst fans is gone now, mainly thanks to everyone being spread out due to all seating but if you all stick together against these bullies they will soon back down, dont forget a lot of these prats are doing this job because they are too cowardly to be real Policemen!

The last time I was in D block was Millwall last season,In the back row and threatened with eviction for the crime of "not sitting properly on my seat"
These Stewards are an expensive gamble I hope the Lizard can afford,to recover the cost of Falmer we need bums on seats regardless of how they are sat.
