Quite a few on here were offering to drive him to Fulham when they bid for him. Liability was the word used about him!
A good man manager can see attributes that can be developed and has the skills bring them out.
Hyypia was an enigma...in Germany his team were doing well till his assistants left....
I suspect Hyypia could have been a great wing man.
He had the good sense to accept he was not a leader at Livrpool, when the captaincy was taken from him,
and given to Gerrard.

I remember Gordon Greer was sent off on his debut for decking an opposition player. And he turned out pretty good.
In more recent times Mats Weiffer was slated for 'that misplaced pass'. And written off by many.
Towards the end of the season he improved every match even though he was doing a job filling in at right back.
I'm sure he's going to be agood player for us next season

First things first, don't you EVER diss El-Abd. People forget that he was a massive player for Poyet for the right reasons. He was instrumental in one of my favourite seasons of all time, as the main partner for the unreal Gordon Greer although, in truth, El Abd started more games so maybe it was the other way around. He might even qualify for this thread as a player who started bad and ended up good.

Adam was a player transformed from a hoofing full back to someone who could play.
And the way he cleared out a defensive wall allowing Vicente to score from a free kick one time was a thing of great beauty.
Also the way he wound up opposition players was turbo Veltman.
He ruined David Nugent, for example.
Better now?

Can name a few from last season. Webby should never be anywhere near a Premier league team according to some on here as well as Ayari, Gruda and Wieffer. Pervis also a liability, Minteh not much better and Hinshelwood gone backwards

Out of our current squad, Ayari - sent out on loan by RDZ after one start and 2 subs but for me, had a breakout season last season benefitting from accumulating injuries in our midfield. Baleba didn’t impress fans or RDZ much at first still reeling from losing Caicedo (who himself needed a development loan before his eventual breakthrough season with us).
I think fans sometimes forget that young players need a few seasons to show their potential - Ayari last season was imo a classic case of what happens when you give youngsters the opportunity to play regularly which doesn’t always come frequently enough for them when others are above them in the team selection.

Baleba is a great shout. Seem to recall in those first few games most of his second touches were a tackle. He looked like a right headless chicken and a nailed on booking every game. Whoever is responsible for his development should give themselves a very firm pat on the back.

He never played in the PL but I'm sure 5"9 Cannavaro was decent. He's also apparently the same height as Baresi.. Or Ake etc
