Brings up a tough issue. The 'funny because it is wrong' scenrio is very hard to argue against (well it is for me as I would be a complete hypocrite!). It has an almost naughty school boy feel about it. You know you shouldn't laugh, but that makes it worse. Some of the best and most famous comedy is based on that notion.
I accept, however, that such humour, directed at an individual can be extremely offensive. It is surely about finding a balance. Humour is an individual thing and requires an individual to judge their audience, be it friends or strangers, before opening their mouth.

If in doubt, assume it's humour, however misguided. The world is full of individuals, if we were all the same and laughed at all the same things, what a dull world it would be. (Sh*t - imagine a world where we all had to laugh at Les dennis!)
