The team clearly can be better than Portugal one of the main reasons it can be considered NOT better than Portugal because of the shit manager.

By that logic, every England manager since 1996 has been 'shit', then. Or maybe – just maybe – the teams aren't as great as everyone thinks they are (or should be)?

Or maybe it's numerous factors resulting in failure.

Indeed, Southgate's record against the Top 20 can be argued either way, and in among those 6 draws there were games we should have won: Spain equalizing in the 6th minute of injury time in 2016, Italy getting a controversial VAR penalty in the 87th minute to grab a late equaliser in 2018.

I fear we are in one of those places where his FA credentials plus historic results will ensure he is manager at Euro 2021 when - in terms of his potency as a manager - his bubble may have already burst.

He needs to stop pick players that are shit like Pickford, Dier, Mings, Phillips, Keane, Stones, and then stop playing others out of position like Walker at RCB and Trippier at LWB.

Completely agree. I'm basically saying what you're saying just meaner

We need someone with that magic combination of gravitas and tactical knowledge. You've got players for what three days before a game? Can't teach anything in that period, just get the best performance from what you've got, one game at a time.

I'm not sure Howe, Potter, or Dyche are that. Lampard might be in a few years.

Is this a serious post or are you just here for arguments sake.. Southgate is a specialist in failure all he's ever done is fail. That team is more than capable of winning things with the right person in charge and that is most definitely not Southgate.

He’s done as well so far as any England manager ever except for one.

He got us to third in the Nations league

We scored more goals last calendar year than any year in the history the England football team

We play good football with lots of young players.

You sir are a clown.

The Nation’s League is just a bunch of dressed-up friendlies though. Few nations give a shit about it.

Dissagre with that we had an extremely lucky draw despite not finishing top of our group in the WC. He has inherited the best team since Robsons reign.

We play more games now than in any year in the history of the England football team. We also recently played games where we could rack up loads of Rooney goals vs Andorra etc. At least the Nations League will stop that now.

I'd go for Warnock. I know that sounds preposterous, but he knows how to motivate players. And he doesn't suffer fools. Anything to stop Smug Eddie or Dyche getting the job (and Potter - maybe in 4 or 5 years, but I want him at the Albion!)

But the last German team to win the WC were together for a long long time playing the same way from youth, through about 3 major tournaments, and they knew how the playing system worked inside out....as did any player who stepped in to any position. If the England set up is trying to teach players in the 3 days before a major game then no wonder they’re so rubbish.

Yes, we'll be singing about that third place in the Nations League for years to come. How we battled to a goalless draw against mighty Switzerland then triumphed on penalties, the ultimate test of quality. And we don't play good football. Not as I understand it, anyway.

He has had a weakened squad for a few reasons and we don't have players match fit yet. Two poor performances but he took the opportunity to experiment and try something new which hasn't looked impressive. I'm not fussed about the England set up, we will get a similar side no matter who the manager is

NO I'm with you, at least with Neil would be interesting / exciting. Last night was boring football I recorded the second half to watch this morning but couldn't be bothered.

Southgate has had a glittering career in management  I’d have fancied Hughton to get a result against Croatia, Southgate hasn’t a clue what he’s doing.

Bring in David Beckham, he has been sadly overlooked in recent months, England's Greatest Hero!

Yes. I like that.

My only worry is that Colin may have started to go a bit computer senile. The violent, argumentative and vindictive Colin is the one we want. Not the soft weepy farmer we saw during the last knockings at Cardiff.

Has he beefed up again at 'Boro'? Is he threatening to call social services and get their number nine's kids put into care if he doesn't get his bollocks out of the soap dish and his face smashing into the ball with purpose, yet?

If he hasn't, perhaps if the FA ply Colin with drink, and keep him 'nicely' during team talks all may work out well.

Especially if someone were employed to hide behind bushes and yell out 'Oy, Colin, what's the score?' when the old fellah starts getting a bit too content.

No way would Potter get it and that's just the reason why we keep making the same mistakes. Lets get a media darling, whoever is flavour of the month and looks good at the press conference oh and woe betide them if they have an opinion on anything.

Southgate has an unbalanced but seriously talented squad but he is apparently incapable of addressing the issues he has within it. I can live with Dunk not being in the squad. I disagree but opinions etc. but can anyone say what he is proposing to do instead? He keeps trying different guys for one game them moving them on and going back to something he has previously discarded like Keane. If Phillips deserved a start, then surely it should've been instead of Rice not with him? Oh and if Phillips deserved to play on last season then why not White? Hmm what's changed for White since last season?

Mings? Don't rate him personally but if he cannot play on the left of a three he cannot play period.

Silly inbuilt bias towards high profile teams and players has been the root cause of England's problems for many years. The best team isn't the XI with the highest media profile.

I know that rugby may not be that great an analogy, especially as in the era I am talking about it was a genuinely amateur game, but two of England's best players when I was growing up, Bill Beaumont and Wade Dooley, played for Fylde and Preston Grasshoppers, two very small clubs. My amateur point stands, but these players were still being picked when you had much bigger clubs such as Bath, Harlequins, Leicester, Northampton and Wasps. The point is that you pick your best players, regardless of what club they play for. Your point on the FA wanting a yes man is valid too - see Brian Clough being passed over, then Terry Venables being got rid of despite our great performance in the Euro 96 tournament. Then I would argue that whatever one thinks of him, Harry Redknapp would have been a better choice than Roy Hodgson.

To be honest, it’s not the worst thing we could do.

At international level you don’t get time to coach players, you need to be a figurehead who can walk into the dressing room and command respect of the players.

If anyone doesn’t buy this concept, look no further then Germany and Klinsmann. Shearer put himself forward for the England job and didn’t even get an interview.

The FA just love a nice predictable safe PR man appointment. Step forward Southgate. Club record? Relegated Middlesbrough. Harsh but true.
