Cats. It's the lack of opposable thumbs you see, no matter how hard you try to teach them to whip something up you always end up picking things off the floor for them.

Newbury, Berkshire.
Asked my wife where ours came from and apparently she got it as a free gift for getting sent a catalogue over 30 years ago

It still gets used 30 years on, and so it seems in this instance, you don't get what you paid for ???

30 years ago ( 1985 ) is pre outsourcing everything to China so it probably will be ok. There's not a lot to go wrong in a slow cooker unless cheap shoddy components have been used to make it ( and guess what the Chinese will use to make theirs ).

Ask a Chinese manufacturer if everything on your manufacturing project is going ok and expect an affirmative answer every time, regardless of whether the thing is being made properly or not. They'd rather save face ( or avoid the embarrasment of admitting there is a problem ), than fess up to a quality control or design issue. By the time the cheap crap has arrived in the Uk it's too late.......

I bought mine in a charity shop for £5 (brand new). Searing the meat is not necessary, just bung the meat or poultry in. Veggies don't do so well.

Works OK.

Searing is not actually necessary but it does make a delicious difference :)

Argos do one for £9.99. Why pay more?
Exactly this. Spending more doesn't mean they last longer either. I wouldn't spend more than a tenner either. If i get a few years out of it then you can't really grumble. Same with washing machines. I never take out insurance either.

The Morphy Richard's 'sear and stew' slow cooker is excellent - it cost just under £30
The beauty of it is that you can sear your meat on the hob in the slow cooker pot first

I got one of these for Christmas from my mother. It's brilliant

Little Ali and me cheered when Mrs Ali told us the slow cooker had packed up. Unfortunately it has been replaced! I understand that they are handy for us as we are all out all day at work, but really don't like chicken cooked in it. Veg currys are excellent though. This searing of the meat people are mentioning, does this stop the meat drying out? (I am not a cook)

I was looking at getting one too and was advised that one with a timer function might be worthwhile. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Just use your normal cooker at half the temperature but double the time

Just get a standard two speed one.....fire on a nice beef curry....go to work, come home 8 hours later......knock up some rice, job done.

Yes, it seals the meat and retains the juices and flavour.

Was there not a piece on TV not so long ago saying that slow cookers do not kill bacteria as they do not get to the required temperature to kill it.

Dunno.

Been using one for 20 years, as have all my family, and almost everyone I work with.

So far, Zero reports of death by Media.
