Anyone know the capacity v Arsenal was it in 82?

No idea about the capacity in 1982 but we hosted (and beat) Arsenal twice. April 10 2-1 (Ritchie, Robinson) in front of 21,019, then Sept 7 1-0 (Ryan) with a crowd of only 13,507. Probably because we'd just been done 5-0 at West Brom and 4-0 at Forest.

For our first game in the first division, the 0-4 v Arsenal, the crowd was 28,604.

I've mentioned this before with no response but in one of these games Hugh Curran lobbed our keeper with a huge "up and under" from way out which landed almost on the goal line but then bounced safely up and over over the bar. Does anyone remember that?

Yes that was a bizarre incident ; I remember it as you do. North Stand end.

Re the main thread I've counted 13...all the games from 1967 onwards with the exception of Charlton at home in 78. As several people have said Rochdale in 1972 felt like there might have been even more there but fans were locked out that night, so I guess the official gate was right.

The 14th was on Saturday at the wonderful Amex and it was a proud day.

What we have been through and how far we have come!

Thank you Tony Bloom.

I'm in! Derby and one other, but I can't remember which one. The Ipswich cup game before the Derby one was quite packed too as I remember. I think Wardy scored in the first minute and we held on against there team with the likes of Mariner, Mills, and other full internationals.

26,748 for Ipswich.

Aston Villa 1972 Willie Irvine scores a goal which came third in goal of the season that year, Kit Napier bundled the ball over the line for our winner after Jim Coombes the Villa goalkeeper lost the ball in the sun!
Only 28,883 I'm afraid so it doesn't qualify!

the most explosive 1st minute of a game I ever saw at the Goldstone

Charlie George clean through from the kick off, only for Peter Grummitt to save

he threw it out to the wing Gerry Fell,I think

who crossed it for Wardy to score in front of the North Stand

all in 30 odd seconds!

16 of these, although I also remember the '54 game v Southampton, as the parking up Nevill Road was further than anyone had seen before. Too young to go though!

Seem to recall that reports said there were another 3000 who couldn't get in that evening.John Templeman scored for us I think.........finished 1-1.We went up and Rochdale stayed up.Surprise surprise!
Say other 30,000 games but that one really stands out.

It was reported that there were 10,000 outside!

My old man always tells my son about when he was at that game though the attendance seems to go up every time he tells it.

Think it was 85,000 in the Goldstone on it's last outing :facepalm:

What was the gate when Jimmy case played his testimonial at the Goldstone, that was the last game I went to with such a big crowd, even if the official figure was lower i reckon there were 30K+

Doubt it as three quarters of the East stand was closed by then. Was a good turnout but not 30k.

Thye Ipswich crowd was 26,748 according to the Carder/Harris bible. It was 0-0 at half-time and we won 2-1 with goals by Fred Binney and Graham Cross. Ward scored in the first minute of the Derby game but Leighton James equalised.
