Should there be an upper age limit for driving?

You see appalling driving from lots of different aged people every day (often BMW drivers), I certainly agree about eye tests but to stop folk from driving when they reach an arbitrary age doesn't seem to be the right way of doing things.

Perhaps you are a person who would pass a driving ability and vision test if it was brought in, many others wouldnt and it is those that we should be legislating against.

That applies to all ages.

My suggestion would be 80th birthday who really needs to drive after that age unless living in the middle of nowhere.

A colleague of mine was knocked off her bicycle and killed, when she got hit by a car driven by an old man who didn't even stop after the crash - because he didn't know that he had hit anyone. He had had his driving licence extended, because his GP had certified him as "safe to drive".

The investigation into why this had been allowed to happen unearthed a statement by the GP that the driver lived in a deep rural area where "there weren't any bus services".

My Lord (doffs cap) - do you agree or disagree with the OP that 80 is the time to stop driving ?

How do I become a Mod :moo:

1) Have a Lobotomy

2) Buy a Nazi suit

3) Support Crystal Palace

4) Swear your not bias, but really you are.

5) Randomly move / delete any threads that you want to.

6) You will need to enjoy Porn (the secret porn stash in mod towers is amazing and endless!!)

7) Like and enjoy ALL threads started by BensGrandad

8) Pay me and the other mods decent sums of money on a weekly basis (amounts to be discussed in PMs)

Not much really, it's easy

I can put up with all the palarse trolls that frequent NSC but you are a disgrace.

Most of the mods on NSC are either too young to do the job properly, or too old to do the job properly.

I don't think there should be an upper limit but I would be hugely in favour of frequent re-tests beyond a certain age. As to what that age should be or how frequent is for wiser people to figure out but it seems far fairer than taking licenses needlessly, whilst hopefully making the roads safer by removing some of the geriatric cruise missiles out there.
Absolutely. The chap two doors down was killed by an old driver in his 80s reversing and crushing him into a gate. It turned out the whole family was permanently trying to hide the keys, so worried were they about him being behind a wheel. Frequent re-tests are needed.

But the facts are that older drivers are far less likely to have accidents which involve injury or a fatality. I posted the link to the Dept of Transport & RAC figures earlier in the thread.

Most are. But I know some drivers whose capability does decline surprisingly early.

Over 4 million drivers, who the facts show, don't have a lot of accidents, have to be retested due to a few who aren't capable?

Perhaps the largest group, 17-25 year olds, should be banned as they are more likely to be killed. Don't allow any under25 to drive.

If hardly being able to walk was a criteria for driving, then disabled people wouldn't be able to drive.

Obviously good eyesight is necessary, and eyes should be tested on a regular basis in any case, regardless of age.

Do you think you could put that in larger font please :moo:

Having an elderly relative I would welcome periodic testing. The current situation is that we have an ongoing argument about it which is as much about generational politics as anything, with her wanting to prove to me she can still do it. The last thing I want is for th issue to be forced by her having an accident and hurting herself and others. There is an assessment you can take but there is no way she will take it unless forced.
