Shirt number retirement

Can an outfield player have the number 1 then ?. Perhaps we could give it to our new £5m centre forward.

I seem to remeber Osvaldo Ardiles wore number one for Argentina in the 1978 World Cup. They assigned the squad numbers in alphabetical order.

Not retiring a number, on the other hand, gives players something to live up to and makes a statement. The Liverpool number 7 shirt, for example - Keegan, Dalglish, Beardsley, McManaman and, er, Clough. Suarez, of course ...

It's even better when goalkeepers wear outfield numbers. Billy Mercer at Bristol City being number 2 for example

This is very true, we tend to forget that. If numbers had been retired before then, there wouldn't be any football.

Imagine if football clubs retired numbers for deceased players 100 years ago. Players today would be wearing shirts numbering in the 100's or 1000's with all the losses from the two World Wars. I don't agree with retiring numbers at all, like others have said it gives other players something to live up to and gives the club some tradition. There are better ways to honour great players.

I don't think player numbers should be retired for just being a great player. I do on the other hand agree that if a player dies while at the club he's number should be retired(Dylan Tombides).
