Man Utd would barely have any numbers left to use based on this as surely Giggs, Beckham, Scholes and Neville's shirts would be retired as well as perhaps Schmeichel's and a few others!

Imagine if this were their policy Beckham wouldn't have worn 7 and 9 and 10 would have been retired also, along with many, many other numbers. We'd be talking about that great left back No 1452

I seem to remeber Osvaldo Ardiles wore number one for Argentina in the 1978 World Cup. They assigned the squad numbers in alphabetical order.

Hate to correct you but Ardiles wore number 2 in the 1978 World Cup. Norberto Alonso (another midfielder) wore number 1.

Can an outfield player have the number 1 then ?. Perhaps we could give it to our new £5m centre forward.

Edgar Davids wore the number 1 shirt last season as the player-manager of Barnet.
