What unfortunately never gets mentioned is quite the extent to which he'd completely lost the plot long before then in that match; there was absolutely nothing cynical or calculated about it, as people have said above: he'd have bitten the head off his grandmother if she'd come near him at the time, never mind his own team-mates, and never mind the opposition.

There's been a fine tradition of lunatic German goalkeepers ever since, like Lehmann or certainly the fantastisch but also profoundly-deranged Olli Kahn - before then, they all seem very nice: Sepp Maier or BERND Trautmann, say.

And, just as the former wild animal Kahn is now a rather cuddly TV pundit, Schumacher and Battiston made up copiously afterwards, something which again maybe detracts from a working up a good old froth about it.

Schumacher was clearly off his rocker from the start of the match, shouting at his own players and pushing the Frenchies.

True about the tradition of bonkers German keepers - there were a few others around Schumacher's time like Uli Stein and Eike Immel.

I'm still in a froth about it more than 25 years later...I've never seen a game where it was so obviously good against evil! The French had flair (Rocheteau, Platini), were so much smaller and leaner (Giresse, Six) and even had players from places you'd never heard of (Tresor - Guadeloupe, Tigana - Mali). The Germans, however, were all built like rugby players (except Littbarski) and could only offer shit hair and even shittier moustaches.

But, the real villain was the referee
