Total overreaction that would leave the staff and any onlookers to make their own assumptions on why someone was so reluctant to have their items scanned.

The random checks in Asda are quick and trouble free and as my wife and I have been using this for a long time and our checks have a 100% accuracy rate these checks are now few and far between.

As for accusations etc, they cannot do you for theft as you haven’t left the store and also as you haven’t been properly trained to use the scanners you can’t be penalised if something doesn’t go through. I’ve seen people get checked and items flagged up, they simply get added to the bill.

As admirable as it is to insist you’re served by a human to preserve their job, I assume these same customers have never used a cashpoint machine or Amazon.
All the time we had a bank nearby we went to the counter. Now our nearest bank is 12 miles away to the east and to the west.

So when using contactless payment do you storm out of a shop and leave your shopping there if you are asked to put your pin number in by the machine.
Using Contactless, I’ve never had to had to use a pi, which is why it’s called contactless.

More expensive items require a pin, but the card is inserted.

Sorry, but emptying your bags on the floor due to a random routine spot check at the self-scan till seems like something of an overreaction to me. Its not an accusation of theft, just the staff doing their jobs. They don't even choose who to check. As for running properly manned tills - its entirely your choice whether you go to a traditional till or a self-scan one to pay.

I've had the random check plenty of times. They just have a root through you bags, zap 10 or 11 items, then you're on your way. Don't see the problem.
Who said the bag was emptied on the floor? That’s quite an assumption to make.

My other half does the shopping nowadays, and happily used the app to scan and go, until two weeks ago. He scanned half a dozen items as he went around the store, putting them into his bag.
He went to the scan area to pay the amount showing on his phone app, when a store employee came over to him, as a barcode showed up, saying his shopping had to be checked.
As you actually have to leave the building with the goods to be accused of theft, he said no, emptied the contents of his bag on the scale, and walked out, saying you can them all back.
Blimey, what a complete over reaction! Pathetically childish.

Banks usually need you to put your PIN in every now and again - usually after a number of contactless card transactions or when a monetary total amount is reached.

If you say so, but it happens frequently apparently. Customers want to be served, and some supermarkets are putting manned tills back in.

It also depends on the attitude of the shop assistant who could ask politely if the scan is correct, not to demand to see it.

As I previously said, we haven’t got a single bank in Newhaven so rarely go into one. Our nearest bank is either Eastbourne or Brighton. Why is that?

So you never used the ATM at the bank and always chose to go to the counter (presumably only during opening hours)!
I rarely get cash out nowadays. I haven’t been into a bank for over two years as we don’t have one in our town.

I've used scanners pretty much since they came in. Every now and again there is random check, normally only 7 items no big deal. A couple of months ago I had one such check and it found something that wasn't scanned. The assistant, who I knew as she had played in the youth team I managed, said she would have to scan everything. Turned out I had taken two packets of crisps from the same place and scanned one twice. However, I hadn't noticed that one of the pack was crinkle crisps and had been put back in the wrong place! She scanned the whole shop and then realised there was nothing actually wrong. Wasn't a big deal and I didn't throw my groceries out of the trolley. Next couple of trips I got checks and again, didn't bother me.

Personally, I find it considerably quicker than queuing for someone else to scan the groceries and then for me to pack them. Even with the odd service check it is still far quicker.

I'd love to do it but I've got one of those 'guilty' looking faces which means I'll get stopped leaving the store and waste 20 minutes whilst the security go through my shopping.
Can anyone do it though or do you need to be a store member?
I remember the first time I purchased an item in the Brighton Apple Store where I used the Apple app to scan and make payment - without the need to get a member of staff involved. I walked out of the store making it very obvious I was walking out with the item in my hand and wasn’t trying to hide or nick it. Felt quite weird.

OK, you said the bag was emptied out onto the scale. But that doesn't make any sense - there isn't a scale at the end of a self-scan shop (where you've had a scanner thing in your hand as you go around the store).

Are you referring to a self-service till where you beep each item through into your bag at the end, ie the ones in Co-Op ? I've NEVER had a random service check there, because the scale knows when you scan it and put the item in the bag.

The only agg I've had with those is when you include a newspaper. The assistant came over and said this is because newspapers often weigh slightly differently day-to-day, depending on supplements, mags and whatnot.

Either way, I still think emptying the bag and storming out is a bit extreme. But then I am quite a mild mannered chap.

The scanner thing is his phone. The app is on his phone.

For the last five years once a week i do my mother’s shopping and use scan & go, at least 1 in 4 times i get stopped for a bag check and i have never felt the staff member to rude or disrespectful, if anything they are embarrassed, however it comes as no surprise to me at all that one of your little anecdotes would hold some drama 🤦

Same here. Have used it for years - we started using online delivery during Covid and still do that once every couple of weeks or so, but often pop in for other bits and pieces. Scanning as you go speeds the whole thing up massively. I reckon the random check happens maybe one in 6-8 visits and takes about a minute. Only had one ‘issue’ which was very similar to what you described, staff simply scanned everything and I was checked on next visit. Having the clubcard stored in Google wallet helps too.
