Not bothered by Southampton, seems like some of their fans would like us as a rival now that Portsmouth have finished.

Interesting that a few of their fans think that we want them to be rivals; one even seems to believe we don't have any tradition rivals... really are quite a thick lot over there.

Bizarrely, I've never considered how weird this Portsmouth situation must be for Southampton fans. They will be gutted to lose their rivals if Pompey go under. We must not and never will replace them.

I hate Southampton. Probably more than Palace. Fuellled by the fact that local TV (both ITV and BBC) fawnned over them so much in the 70s and 80s, while we were completely ignored - even though we were attracting bigger crowds and were higher than them in the league. And who can forget 1978 - and the McMenemy and Burkinshaw love-in? Disgusting.

I would be upset if Portsmouth went bust - a club with a great history and genuinely brilliant support - but I cannot describe the pleasure it would give me if the putrid Saints were to ever disappear off the face of the earth.

Who gives a f*** about a soul-less, insignificant club from Hampshire which will never be on anyone's footballing radar except Portsmouth's? I switched on during the pre-match warm-ups for that Ajax match before promptly switching off and it looked as if there were about 23 people in the stadium and thousands of empty, sun-bleached red seats. Glory days NSC, glory days indeed.

Precisely.

The thing is, having read a bit of the thread on their forum which was linked, we're exactly the same. All clubs are. We love our manager, hate others. We think our stadium is the best, and hate most of the rest. We think we're a big club, and others are deluded if they think theirs is. It's all pretty sad because most people can't see that we're all exactly the same, but we come from Brighton so support them. They're from Southampton, so support them. Rivalry is what makes the game, but it's also pretty pathetic when threads like this appear. But our friends from the Southampton forum probably do the same things they criticise us for, and we certainly do enough for them to be critical of.

Correct Sir!...We love our club...they love theirs....end of!

I think the best way of judging any 'rivalry' is to think about how gutted you were when we lost to the other team. Personally, I didn't even bother going to Southampton last season as I feel so little about them, whereas I was so angry after Palace I probably could have killed a medium-sized animal with my bare hands.

I find myself agreeing with the majority of your posts. I was unhappy we lost to Saints but it felt nothing like losing to Palace!!

Now that saints aren't in our league I couldn't care less. Best of luck Nigel! You clearly know how to manage a team! And best of luck Southampton. I actually think a lot of saints games next season at home especially will be exciting to watch! Your fans will be buzzing at being back in the prem! Hope we join you soon!

Ridiculous idea. That would be a step too far even for fans as deluded as Southampton's seem to be

A big club?: Probably not. Not lets to the likes of Liverpool, Man Ure, etc etc. Not even close.
Bigger than Brighton: Well what is the criteria?? League positions over the past 50 years??, crowd sizes over the past 50 years??, international players of the past 50 years, players that have been produced by our academy? etc etc Could someone tell me what the criteria is?
