There's nothing this Southampton squad is well-equipped to do in the Premier League.

Imo the right approach for Southampton would have been "accept the squad is weak and try to use the PL year to build something that can bounce straight back up and be more competitive the next time". Like Ipswich did, renewing the contract with their manager despite knowing that reaching 25 points would count as a good season. Play nice football, develop players, show off the academy, work hard, lose big. Add some sugar and long-term hope to the despair.

Not saying Martin would have been the right or wrong option for that, but imo it would have been the right approach to do like Ipswich.

Instead, Southampton spends the summer bringing in has "players last seen doing nothing" like Adam Lallana and Charlie Taylor, along with some loanees. This along with sacking Juric and Martin has made the football world well aware that the football directors of Southampton has no direction or idea about the future because they've engaged themselves in some deluded and half-hearted attempt of competing in the division this year.

I'm not saying Russell Martin is a fantastic coach or anything, but the results he had were expectedand very few would have gotten much more out if it.
Agree. They should have stuck with him. Clueless club.

I think his reasoning at Southampton was that he was all about getting some of the younger players to come through, and to be assets. He certainly saw potential in them to do this and it wouldn’t happen overnight, but it was starting to take shape. Then he was sacked.
We’ll never know what might’ve been for Southampton this season had he stayed.
Hahahahahahaaa

Indeed. Certain similarities between him and Graham Pottter, both need to be given time to build their own squad, and both like to play a possession based game.

In a different scenario, and had there been a vacancy, we may have been considered for the head coach role here, certainly he would have been given the necessary time to make his mark, Tony doesn't weild the axe unless absolutely necessary.
Even Pep has wised up and said the possession based game is all but over.

Interesting, they didn’t get automatic promotion under him went up via the play offs. Made a complete mess of the PL and now he’s being highly rated?
I’d rather Liam Roseinor as our next manager than Martin.
Mrs DiS as a Saints season ticket holder doesn’t think very highly of him. Seriously questions his judgement and sentimental over-reliance on certain crap players amongst other things.
Admittedly he was desperately let down by the club and its hierarchy, but if you haven’t got players good enough to play the way you want to play in the league you find yourself in, you do something different, maybe?

Again, what kind of football would they have to play to stay up?

If we'd gone down in 2018 or 2019, would TB have stuck with Chris Hughton to get us back up again?
Should Narwich have sacked Danny Farke when they were relegated the first season he got them into the EPL?

They didn't, and they went up again. Then they went down again and he was eventually sacked.

If we had gone down in our first season in the EPL maybe TB would have sacked CH, maybe not.

We will never know.

But, but, but..... Stains sacked Martin before he had completed much more than half a season managing Stains in the EPL.
So it is hard to see what relevance your question about Hughton and Bloom has to the subject of the premature sacking of Martin.

May as well ask 'if we had won the FA cup in 2019 would TB have stuck with Chris Hughton?'

The main issue I have with them sacking Martin, is that they did so, to replace him with probably the most forgettable nothing manager in PL history.

If they really had a plan, then fine, sack Martin and put it in place. But as far as I can tell thingummy's main qualification for the role is that he is foreign and they wanted someone who was different to who they just sacked

I had a tiny wager with a Saints fan that Juric would not see out the season. That fiver is now in my pocket.

Ivan Juric is the new Remi Garde. Wanted a PL job and could only get a doomed club which would do nothing positive for their reputation longer term.

Juric was disliked by everyone at Stains and it's amazing that they stuck with him as long as they did. This is what's wrong with not having any club philosophy or plan. Martin had a vision, including for what would happen if/when they were relegated. Too much emphasis on outcomes, not process.

Looking forward to @El Presidente unearthing how much Martin and Juric's sackings cost the club in compensation

Worth recalling Martin signed a THREE YEAR contract extension last summer.

Through a mutual friend who knows a Southampton player, he said that the players disliked him, and never quite understood what he was trying to achieve. They liked Martin despite realising they weren't good enough. Felt like Juric had checked out pretty early and had no desire to keep them up.
