Ha ! Explain why not ? (Does anyone in boxing dispute this ? )
Well, I have apparently denied his Islamic identity and exaggerated his worth, so, the answer may be found in there, somewhere.

Perhaps I have conflated great with iconic, albeit I'm not going to lose sleep about that.

It's hard to listen to this without tears.

For me Ali is up there certainly as a boxer both for what he did inside a d outside the ring.

Maybe that's part of the reason we disagree. For greatest sporstperson, I'm focused only on how good they were at the sport, so I'm not going to discount Maradona for example. What Ali did outside the ring tells us about the man he was, but it's nothing to do with how good he was at his sport.

But of course it’s a subjective thing (although plenty of others still take that view as well - but yes Bolt, Federer, etc will have their cheerleaders. But few rivals have Ali’s political dimension. )
Indeed it is subjective. So are we after the greatest sportsperson who also has a political dimension? Federer is great, but so is Djokovic. Who was a better sprinter than Bolt though?

Glad to hear it. I evidently chose the wrong time to go on a nostalgia trip. Does the model railway still run?
It was running last summer, but has an uncertain future. Its run and maintained by the guys that build the engines as their hobby, the council charges them for rent of the engine shed, but has also given them a grant of the same value each year. Council proposes to remove the grant, so it is likely not going to be something the guys can afford to continue with. Council won't be able to rent it to anyone else, but the pressure to commercialise anything and everything possible, to maintain services is strong.

I didn't watch the final yesterday, but I read Ali Carter complaining about people shouting when he was taking shouts. I know it does happen, but I do find Carter a bit of a whinger. So I'm just asking to what extent did it happen? Was it off putting or a bit of nothing?

For me, a bit of both. Some absolute idiots in the crowd but it certainly wasn't every shot. Hardly happened at all at the start of the evening but increased in number as Ronnie got near the finish line.

I do sympathise with the players who experience it. I know people want to support, but its not a football crowd.

I guess i wondered about Carter, as I think he moans sometimes. He was moaning about Trump fluking a shot the other day. But that's just part of the game, it happens. Not many people have a whinge about it after the game, especially when they've won.

I find O’Sullivan’s manner with his ‘meh’ attitude to competing and winning, pretty underwhelming and an insult to his opponents. I love watching him play but I’d really like to see him being a bit more gracious.

Sad to hear. I'll try to take another trip down memory lane when the weather improves and see how things look.

In a literal and metaphorical derailment, this is another mini railaway gem that is sadly not open to the public, but the land is not fenced off and we occasionally walk there - through the long brick tunnel with a torch.

That's literally the only reason anybody can think of to go to Haywards Heath.
Getting rid of it to save money would be like the Natural History Museum trying to raise funds by selling all of their dinosaurs.

(To be clear, I'm well aware that museums sell fossils all the time)

Edit: ignore the above, was thinking of a different railway to the one you're [presumably] writing about.

My first memory of miniature trains was at Drusillas early 60’s. There was another lethal ride for kids on a metal tray over a steep slide of metal rollers.

Harsh.

I can't possibly comment because I'm trying to rehabilitate myself with the Crawley dwellers, one of who has got the serious hump with me after I recounted tales of 1980.

And the more I think about it, the more I'm pondering a 3 day visit, with the bike, checking out the old haunts, get the train to Horsham, and the long train journey to Arundel. Like wot I did 44 years ago every weekend.

Has to be done.

I just realised I'm getting confused anyway, it's a different miniature railway in Haywards Heath.
Forget I wrote anything. :wrong::facepalm:

The miniature railway I was commenting on in the post you quoted, is in Goffs Park in Crawley.
