Ddi anyone else think it refreshing that Ricky Ponting spend the majority of his time at the crease on Sunday not wearing a helmet?

I noticed that as Giles and Collingwood was bowling he kept his "lid" off and was batting in an Aussie cap and even when Goughie was on, he kept the cap on.

Although Goughie was innocuous, he is still pretty swift.

I have never worn a protective helmet in all the years I have played cricket,(35 years) even in the Sussex League against such bowlers as Kirtley etc, I always took the view of Viv Richards...if you watch the ball , you should know how to duck or hit it!

I thought it as great!

All youngests need to wear one now because of the rules done by the ECB. I still wear mine even through i'm allowed to not wear one at the age of 18.

but if your fat slow and old your going to get your nose smashed up

think Gatting !

its your decision

I think Gatting got a ball from Marshall that hit the top of his bat and shot into his face.

As -86 says, anyone under 18 has to wear a lid. I wore one in the nets and found that the grill was distracting, although I can see why kiddies should be protected, especially as the wickets we play on are sometimes unpredicable.

yeah like the wicket we played on yesterday, our WK got hit in the cheekbone by the ball standing up to Bradley.

wicket keepers too are supposed to wear one if they are standing up.

most bizarrely I once went to an MCC match at Lords and their wickie was about 70 and kept in a helmet -looked very odd.

although they only cost about 30 quid (a third of the price of a reasonable bat) they can be a red rag to abull in club cricket sometimes.............................. cheaper than the insurance premium tho

sounds like a bit of psychology from Ricky Ponting to me.

As if to say Collingwood, Gough etc aren't quick enough to trouble him.

and in one day cricket you can't bowl a legal ball that passes over the batsman shoulder when in a standing psoition.

anything over shoulder height should be called a "no ball" which means that really a helmet should not be needed at all.

Not quite true - you can bowl one an over that is over shoulder height but not over head height. Good addition to the rules in my opinion - the game is already to much in favour of the batsmen.

With regards to wearing helmets you don't generally get hard enough pitches at club level to worry about helmets. i play inthe south west league and very rarely have I seen a pitch that even Harmy could pepper my nose with.

Also I have seen enough top edges into the face for some to wear them even to spinners.
