Spice Merchant was very good last time I went, but that was a while ago. I was told that it's gone downhill, but would prefer to make my own mind up. The Shanaz on the high street was very good when I got a takeaway from there. Looks awful from the outside but the restaurant is downstairs.

I've heard very good things about the new Thai mentioned above by jevs, but I'm led to believe it's quite small. They don't have a booze licence, so you have to bring your own. Never been in the other Thai so can't comment other to say that it's always been rammed whenever I've been past.

What is a good English restaurant a fish and chip shop as there are very few restaurants serving standard English type food with out any foreign influence. If it is run by English people it will probably close early.

Pailin Thai? Probably due to the lack of competition. There is a dearth of decent asian / oriental restaurants in the area. I genuinely don't think there is a stand-out chinese, japanese or thai restaurant in the town. Doesn't have a decent steak restaurant or a decent Italian either come to think of it.
Best bet is go to the Ram at Firle or the Griffin in Fletching.
really ,try the one next to the Lansdown pub:dunce:

There is a new Thai restaurant called Erawan Thai Bistro, opened about 50 yards from Palin.....down the hill, turn left and it's almost next to the Lansdowne pub but in Friars walk.

Chinese...Panda Garden or Beijing. 3 decent Indians, my favourite is Spice Merchants. Loads of italians including Famiglia, Ask and Prezzos.

If you go to the Ram, not only would you need a taxi but you'd also need another mortgage.

panda garden has been there years ,the lady that runs/manages it is has an half decent Lewes accent now :)

The Hearth above the bus station is getting excellent reviews. Not been myself though.

I've often thought Lewes was lacking more decent restaurants.

Have to agree with HHGull - Lewes is a great place to drink but not great for food. When it comes to food, the pubs are stuck in a timewarp (with the exception of The Snowdrop). For a specialist burger place, the owners of The Elly really need a trip to Brighton to see how it is done these days.

The Hearth does a very good pizza - they make their own sourdough base and you get decent quality toppings. Beware the décor though - they have deliberately left it looking 60's bus station chic so not to everyone's taste.

Limetree Kitchen (just up from the Station) has been getting some very good reviews recently but can't comment personally on the food.

For posh nosh, you do have Pelham House but I've not eaten there for a while and I didn't think it was great value for money last time I went.

Ask, Prezzo or Pizza Express are the only restaurants I've been to in Lewes.
I like visiting the cafe near the prison, the owner has a very good sense of humour.

Spice Merchant was very good last time I went, but that was a while ago. I was told that it's gone downhill,

This is what actually triggered my post. I typically meet with my chum in The Snowdrop, have a few wonderful beers, pop into The Gardeners, Tom Paine, Lewes Arms then Spice Merchant. But, my friend said he went recently and was quite surprised how bad the Merchant had turned.

That's nothing. I was in there last week and 300 people arrived on a dinghy from Libya.

Well, they claim they want a better life and you can't get much better than The Snowdrop. Fair play I say

In which case I'd give Shanaz or one of the Thais a bash then, my good man.

Someone said the Real Eating Co. I have to disagree. If you like paying over the odds for small portions then give it a go.
Oh & it's very pretentious; but then again, so is Lewes these days.
