Regarding the trains, you need to change at Gatwick. There is generally one an hour, departing at 03, takes about 75 minutes.

There is a two-hourly direct service to Reading from Brighton calling at Hove, Shoreham, Worthing, Chichester, Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke. It'll probably take you a while though.

What time does it open at. We are getting into Reading just after 10am (I think), so Wetherspoons and then in theory there for 11am, but CAMRA pubs sometimes do not open until midday.

You could change at Clapham. That is what I'll be doing, mind you I am travelling from Croydon.
The journey is about an hour 20 mins.
