OK, got some time on my hands so done some research on 25 goal a season hit men from the Championship, League 1, and League 2 over the last few seasons. Have included goals in all competitions. Looking at these players it becomes clear that if we want a PROVEN 25 goal a season striker we will have to pay BIG money. However, there is also proof that lower league players can step up and we will need to trust in Gus to pick out the next Gary Hooper or Grant Holt, whether from the UK or abroad.

The one thing to learn from this is that the Southend scouts can spot a goalscorer. Sign them up.

And more importantly you forgot Charlie Austin, signed for £15k

Charlie Austin scored 20 this season, I've only listed the top 5 scorers

Theres nothing very impressive about naming the top goalscorers in all the divisions for the past two years.

I've tried to put in more information than that if you bother to read it, like how much they were signed for, who from and how they'd performed the season before they were signed.

Bloody hell some of you lot are a right miserable bunch! :wozza:

I thought it was quite useful actually in showing that good strikers can be unearthed at our level and not always for a fortune...................here's hoping

Thanks Greens :(
Taking Bobby Zamora as an example...

For BHA

Season 2000/2001

Scored 28 League goals and 2 FA Cup goals (30)

Season 2001/2002

Scored 28 League, 2 Worthington Cup and 2 FA Cup goals (32)...

Giving us back to back promotions...

Compare this with his record for Bristol Rovers in the 1999/2000 season...

4 sub appearances and no goals...

My (and your) point is GP will have to pull a similar trick if we are to get a diamond in the rough for not too much wonga

It is a bit of an obvious statement to make though, to say wouldn't it be great if we could find a 25 goal a season striker for hardly any money. He has tried to do this in Hollroyd but failed unfortunatly

Looking at the Calderon example, there might be a nugget of a striker abroad we could pick up cheap, but seem to remember a certain South American forward we signed a few seasons ago that was a bit of a disaster after being highly recommended...

Don't know what to suggest tbh

bit early to completely write the lad off yet and the stats offered rather reinforce that - especially those of Bobby Z.

let's wait until the lad has a pre-season behind him and maybe has a chance in a side which is set up to play to his strengths.................

The point that needs to be emphasised is simple.

If we want to sign a proven goalscorer we will have to pay big bucks for them, but the list shows all of those players started somewhere, Gus can unearth a few gems in the summer, and I am sure he can find a striker who he can make into a goalscorer.
