But they are both pukka words with potentially similar meanings.

To orientate to me means to point something in a certain direction.

As does orient, hence the ...ate is unnecessary.

Orient has been on the decline for a good while (although this is distorted by the use of orient as a noun.

I meant as in people don't often understand what it means.

Ask people what is speed is, and then what velocity is. A lot of people struggle.

Then throw in trajectory.
