So why would he go to Palace then?

Reading were likely to get relegated when Gus was in talks, it was in March after all. With big money to spend and, say, half a season left, he could take on the challenge of securing Palace another season in the premier league. It'd be a very different project than taking on the Reading job with a couple months left of the season and very possible relegation on the horizon. I'm only speculating of course.

Forgot it was on until just before the end, turned on just in time to hear Gus talking about Arsenal needing to spend money, had to smile to myself.

It's hard to work out exactly where EPL vacancies are likely to crop up any time soon. You'd expect all three promoted clubs to struggle, but those managers all have a recent promotion on the CV so will be safe for quite some time.

Nigel Adkins and Brian McDermott might not agree with you.

Agreed, but Adkins went on January 18th and McDermott on March 11th, and even those were considered hasty.

Surely we are working on the basis that Gus is likely to be in work long before then, which SHOULD rule out any of the promoted three?

There are no likely openings in the Championship, none that would appeal to Poyet anyway so can't see him managing this side of Christmas

the 3 teams that got promoted won't be getting rid of their managers any time soon, and even if they did would be aiming higher than Poyet....can't see ANY other possible openings for him at the top level

As for this league, usually you'd bank on the 3 relegated teams ditching their managers pretty pronto, but Redknapp is safe, as it Sexy Nige at Reading...Coyle has only just taken over and will probably do alright...plus Whelan comes across as a very patient and realistic chairman.

He clearly loves Leeds but McDermott is safe enough...the two that might come up and might be both attractive to him due to budgets and fairly realistic are Forest and Leicester. Even then though he'd only be one of several other likely candidates. He'd be put off by the budgets at pretty much every other team in the league.

You'd expect all three promoted clubs to struggle, but those managers all have a recent promotion on the CV so will be safe for quite some time. Stoke look bad but they've got a new manager so he's safe, Sunderland likewise for now. And even if the latter did sack Di Canio, it would obviously mean they were struggling so they wouldn't go for another hothead foreigner. Beyond those five, there isn't an obvious contender for a relegation spot. Fulham have backed Jol this summer, Clarke has quite a lot of credit in the bank at West Brom, Pochettino is doing well at Southampton and Lambert is turning Villa around - I can't see any of those going. Meanwhile, the top eight won't look at Gus twice. Just where is the suitable opening going to come?

I still feel we could see Gus at The Amex this season as a Championship manager. I think Leeds would be his dream in this division, but don't rule out Leicester (Pearson is only one minor bad run away from the sack surely?), or any of the three relegated clubs who will have all that parachute money for him to spend, and would probably pull the trigger if they become detached from the top six.

Good analysis. I think Stoke are the most likely. If Hughes buggers up he'll do it big style and could be gone by Xmas. Other than that Leics look to be front runners but I think they have been even quiter than us in the market so maybe they've decided to stop throwing money around.

Wouldn't be surprised if Blackburn sack again soon if they don't start winning.

Gus would surely be interested.

All correct. I think Leicester is a good call, however at a club desperate for success and workmanlike in its approach at best, could Poyet turn it round quick enough.

Edit.
Of course Laudrup rumoured to be unhappy at Swansea and his agent has severed ties with them.

He may think twice about the Leicester job, I think they may have already hit the ceiling, haven't they now stopped spending?

I think his best bet in the Prem is Newcastle or Stoke. Can't see him getting any other Prem jobs. Leics or QPR in the Champ.
