Not sure Ambrose is qualified and Prior's keeping has the same flaws as Gerriant Jones.

I believe Ambrose qualifies this year. He'd better bat a bit better than last year to even have a sniff of an England place.

Who's keeping on the A tour? Read?

Squad was;

England A squad: Ian Bell (Warks; Capt), Rikki Clarke (Surrey), Richard Dawson (Yorks), Paul Franks (Notts), Alex Gidman (Gloucs), David Harrison (Glam), Jon Lewis (Gloucs), Sajid Mahmood (Lancs), Kevin Pietersen (Hants), Michael Powell (Glam), Matthew Prior (Sussex), Owais Shah (Middx), Vikram Solanki (Worcs), Graeme Swann (Notts)

Looking at that Prior is the keeper.

Err, so what is Read doing this winter?

Pieterson was replaced by Alistair Cook of Essex today.

I'd look to start the 1st Test vs. Australia with the following batting line-up:

1. Trescothick
2. Strauss
3. Vaughan
4. Thorpe
5. Pietersen
6. Flintoff
7. G Jones
8. Giles
9. S Jones
10.Hoggard
11.Harmison.

I think that is the likely side, would like to see a proper wicket keeper in there, rather than a batsman who can keep a bit, if we are going down that line, why is Banger not given the gloves (as he does for Somerset in one day games) and then get a better batter than Jones in?

Also I still think it looks a tad unbalanced, not sure with Vaughan at 3, think you need a grafter like Butcher in there.

I do think Vaughan's best has been when he has been at the top of the order and in the last Ashes Series, the Aussies really did not know how to deal with him there.

If you post the team people would ask where would you bat Vaughan, Pietersen etc - hence the phrase "batting line-up".

Did I waste my time?

Can't have the tail starting at 6 tho.

Thats the trouble iwth Pietesen - he unbalances the side, Asking flintoff to bat at 6 is a big ask and if it doesn't work then the tail wil get swept away very quickly

You've also got to say that Giles is looking like a decent lower middle order batsman nowadays too.

Ive followed KP throughout his career and im convinced he should be in the England squad.
He is a very aggressive player and can sometimes suffer from Hick-like over zealous shotplay. However, his career stats are unquestionable and he has the ability to win the game for his side in a matter of overs.

Maybe more importantly though he is an arrogant, cocky, over aggressive little shit who hates losing and thrives on destroying better known players reputations. In short he's a winner and for this alone he deserves a place in the Ashes squad.

(ps. he is an outstanding fielder and can bowl a bit too)

It's ridiculous to suggest Flintoff is the start of the tail - he's a genuine world-class all-rounder with 5 test centuries, an average comfortably in the 30s, and a recent test average over the last couple of years in the 40s.

Botham used to bat 6 when England were a class side, and his test average was about the same as Flintoff's is now.

One of the reasons we must find a place for Pietersen is that he can score quickly, and that means setting fields and run chase targets is risky for the opposition.

Having the likes of Flintoff and Pietersen in the team will make the Aussies think twice about setting generous declaration totals, and this may force them to go for more shots in order to rack up enough runs sufficiently quickly. Therefore, we need 4 quality pacemen plus Giles to take advantage.

I think that's what is called 'hitting the nail on the head'.
