I looked at trains from brighton, and found £36, but I shall check out the Huntingdon option

Travelcard will be miles pit of zone if you use one so you will get an excess fare.

Can't see Huntingdon being in the zones

However it may be different if you have a Network card (if they still exist)

Spoke to woman in the ticket office on friday and she told me they are looking to go on sale on Monday 11th. Give them a call monday and try it!

Just had a look for train tickets and found:

Barnham to Peterborough – anytime return - £57.90.

Or, Barnham to Victoria – anytime return - £14. Victoria to Peterborough – anytime return - £32. Total = £46.
