I have no idea what this result on a Google search means - can anyone clarify it, as it looks....erm...'iffy'?

"Craig Pawson (born 2 March 1979) is an English professional football referee who officiates primarily in the Premier League, having been promoted to the panel of Select Group Referees in 2013, as well as in the Football League. He is based in Newcastle and is associated with Newcastle Fc ."

One of the worst performances I’ve ever seen at the Albion in the premier league era.

Ha! Interesting detective work 🙂

He supports Sheffield United though 🤷‍♂️

Premier League’s official match centre account tweeted a short statement on both overturns as if it was needed:

1. “57’ VAR OVERTURN - VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by Lamptey on Gordon and recommended that play restarted with a Newcastle free kick as the contact was outside the penalty area.”

2. “70’ VAR OVERTURN - VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by van Hecke on Willock and recommended an on-field review – with this deemed to be minimal contact and not sufficient for a penalty. Upon review, the referee awarded an indirect free kick to Brighton and issued a yellow card to Willock for simulation.”

Incompetence and poor refereeing but no conspiracy theories from me

It started so early with the non foul and booking when burn flattened minteh.

Weifer I did not think was a foul but if it was a foul then it has to be a yellow. Bruno not getting booked was incredible. Three bad challenges and not a single one a yellow.

We should also have had a pen. That was a clear foul. He stood across the defender to shield the ball and was kicked over. I assume VAR couldn’t send to screen again.
Guimaeres gets away with it every game.

Having got home and now watched back some bits I'm even more angry - 100% a booking for Burn early on which he didn't give a foul for and a yellow changes the game.
Both pens obviously incorrect.
Wieffer non 2nd yellow the only correct call of the day but it could have been given.
O'Riley pen there is 100% contact, he'd have given it to Newcastle and it would never ever have been overturned.
The Ayari handball is 100% but it wasn't a foul by JPvH so in essence another incorrect call.
An avalanche of appallingness and thats not allowing for the 50/50 calls of which he gave every single one against us. One of the very worst refereeing displays you will ever see and one of the very few where there is a genuine case to be argued of bias.

Fair enough, but what does "...associated with Newcastle FC" mean, and does he officiate a higher proportion of their matches as opposed to other PL teams?

Just far enough away from LDC
My own view (having not seen any replays)

- 1st one looked tight as to whether in or out the box.

- 2nd one - never a pen on 1st viewing as it lookma clear dive. Can't have claimed to have seen it either

- 3rd one, I didn't think it was a foul for the free kick. Haven't seen if it was a handball i.e. outside of natural body shape/moved to ball

Our pen appeal. I was sure it would be subject to a proper review (paused game, image on screen etc)..very surprised that didn't happen

Burn - can't believe it wasn't given as a free kick. I was sure it would have been a card too

Wieffer - surprised at 1st booking given Burn hadn't even been given as a foul. Second incident, I wasn't sure it was a foul in 1st place..suspect the red card check probably said that hence why no second yellow given but can't overturn the the decision of a foul.

Bruno - at least 2 bookings not given.

Tonali - man does he fall over easily.

Welbeck - must be bad for him to lose his temper. He was clearly pulled back.

So in summary a weak and inconsistent refereeing performance. I reserve the opportunity to change my mind once I've seen the incidents on screen
