It is a bit pathetic, though. 'I'm retiring because it's frustrating not being first choice.' There's always a chance he could sneak in, couple of injuries or whatever. Basically shows how much it means, ie nothing.
That's why I could never understand all the criticism of Becks. He has a huge ego and massive profile, all those times he got left out under McClown he could have retired - but was prepared to endure all the negative coverage for one more chance to play for England. Legend, and an example to all these other pitiful specimens.
and Becks is an absoloute LEGEND... the Gary Hart of England?![]()
When you get to that level of celebrity and marketing there is no such thing as bad publicity...he managed to keep his "image/brand" in the public eye, despite not being picked, which is exactly why sponsors associate themselves with him.
He really isn't good enough to play for England now but the bandwaggon still rolls on !

Casper Schmeichel ?
Fair enough, but I think you're over-analysing it with Becks. He just wants to play football for England. Whether he is good enough, or gets picked, is not his call.[/QUOTE
He wants to play football for England as that is the highest form of publicity/exposure he can get. Even though injured he managed to get himself in to the dugout during the World Cup despite not actually having a role. So why didn't Rio and Owen also cram in there too ? Or, why didn't Becks watch the game from the stands like most injured/retired ex England players ?
Answer = exposure.....if a goal goes in at either end, the camera ALWAYS has a reaction shot of the bench/dugout..........simples
