yeah, take 20k a week from poor people, and play in a stadium where many eat hot dogs and burgers (pigs brains and genitals) - then get all moral about a debt company that does what it says without any lies.

what an idiot......just wants out probably.

This.

I dont get the feeling towards these companies - so what if they sponsor the club, no one is forcing you to use their services and if you are gullible to use them, then quite frankly you shouldnt even be trusted with money.

In London village.
Cisse has the balls to stand up against a bunch of legalised loan sharks. Amazing that some people have such a diminished idea of values that they don't see that as something to respect.

Loving the sanctimonious bollox on here! As we sit in a stadium and watch our team both bearing the name of our sponsors who, together with Santander, were specifically mentioned by the FSA as the reason why they were issuing guidance that no-one should lose their home as a result of a (previously) unsecured debt.

Not to mention Newcastle Brown Ale available inside the ground and it wasn't that long ago that the club were sponsored by that alcoholic beverage.

If he doesn't like it he should sod off to join Anzhi Makhachkala then for the money. A club whiter than white.

or, Cisse has used a populist agenda to publically create a friction with the club and engineer a move. Amazing that some people cant see the obvious agenda because someone happens to appeal to ones idea of values.

To be honest, and I may be being a tad naive here, I don't think it's either. It's just a simple thing of it being against his religion to be seen to support Wonga's business. I don't think he had a choice.

I really don't think its about balls or engineering a move, just something he feeld he has to do.

point is its not against his religion, being the lender would be. his fellow muslim players are reported OK wearing the sponsor, and he didnt object when it was Virgin Money. he should have just said that he was against the sponsor on principle, then he'd have the balls Dandyman talks of.

What an odd argument you put forward there. I'm a vegetarian and was for many years a strict vegan - should I desist from going anywhere where people eat dead animals???

As for the poor people and footballers wages argument - he didn't set that system up, and how do you know that he doesn't give Zakat as part of his religious duty?

To be honest, I don't know the player so have no idea whether it's a genuine complaint or, as you suggest, a get out clause on his part.

However, usury is something that really needs to be exposed for the evil that it is if you ask me, and if this case helps highlight that then good on him.

Just as an aside, does he play during Ramadan? having not eaten since the middle of the night?

there was programme about this last week - yes, if they are fit and in form. the fasting starts at dawn, so in the winter its not necessarily such a big deal. its down to player and manger to assess the impact.

Deserves a bounce...

A Newcastle footballer who said the team's sponsor clashed with his Muslim beliefs has been criticised for visiting a casino. Papiss Cisse has been refusing to wear the loan company Wonga-branded strip.

However, it has now emerged that the Senegal striker was spotted at Aspers Casino in the city in November. His agent said that he was not a gambler, but a Muslim councillor said Cisse would be letting Muslims down just by visiting a casino. Newcastle United is currently on a pre-season trip to Portugal, but Cisse pulled out, saying he was not prepared to promote the pay-day loans company, citing his religion, and instead offered to wear an unbranded strip.

A spokesperson for Aspers Casino described Cisse as "an occasional visitor" who was "very well behaved and very welcome", but would not confirm whether or not he placed any bets. Madou Diene, the player's agent, said: "Papiss Cisse is not a gambler."

Newcastle city councillor Dipu Ahad has previously defended Cisse's stance on Wonga. He said: "I feel absolutely ashamed of what he's done, there's not just me there's been other people who've been supporting him. "But what he's done now, seeing him in the casino, even if he wasn't gambling, I think this gives a wrong message. People will say, 'look, this is Islam they can pick and choose whatever they want', and Islam isn't about picking and choosing."

Was going to make the same point roughly until I spotted this. In light of his attendance at casinos even more so. I think people would have respected him for doing it on principle alone.
