anyone else watch Panorama tonight?

Suggesting by sum primarily relegious sectors that condoms actually increase aids rather than prevent it because the virus can go through the rubber etc and being that much thinner as well as the breakage/leakage claims. Cant see the world changing despite some of these high up religious people and their claims.

I watched it, what they appeared to be saying was that the only way to avoid aids is by abstaining from sex which is pretty much true, but surely that is defeating human nature. Over the last few days we have had stories on the news about the group from the US who are over here at the moment trying to pursuade kids to remain virgins until they get married, the silver ring thing or whatever they call it.

I wish people, including the Catholic Church and those silver ring thing, could just accept that it is human nature to want to have sex, we have been around far longer than any of their churches, we managed perfectly well before any of them existed. The aids epidemic is of course a very serious matter, I still believe that the best way, other than abstention, to protect myself against that and a myriad of other diseases is by using a condom.

As someone who has never married, nor wishes to do so, and who has no intention of ever fathering children do the church think that I am going to listen to them and spend my whole life in abstinence, I think not!!!

That programme got me rather cross.

It seems to me that the Catholic Church's "evidence" came from parts of scientific research taken entirely out of context. The authors of the research were discrediting the Vatican's conclusions.

Of course the use of condoms has to go hand in hand with other HIV prevention measures such as education, and abstinence is the only sure way of preventing HIV. But, as Gully says, in the real world people do have sex.

It is going to be poor people in developing countries, who can be more influenced by this religious claptrap, who suffer.

I couldn't believe one church guy, who argued (more or less) that we shouldn't use condoms because they are unnatural - "look at dogs - they don't use condoms" FFS :censored:

i am glad you cleared up what was being said on this programme. It was on in the pub last night after the football but the sound wasn't on so i just saw loads of condoms on test tubes going by, it was quite odd.

surely, though, there is more chance of getting clap or aids or whatever if you don't use a condom?

the Roman Catholic church is a f***ing disgrace, they havent got a bloody clue about 99% of anything, they're hideously out of touch with the real world 80 years ago, let alone today, theyre full of absolute clap trap.

every single fact they came out with was flawed by virtue of the fact they mis-quoted and misrepresented all the facts they used.

I'd go so far as to say the Roman Catholic church are partly responsible for the spread of aids by forbidding its sheep/followers to use condoms, thereby greatly increrasing the chances of spreading STD's, lets face it sex is a natural and healthy thing for people to partake in, you are never going to stop it, so why forbid proven education and prevention ? ? ?

Sort of sums up religion full stop really regardless of the particular Church.

The spread of hiv/aids in Africa , North and South is laregly due to the males simply refusing to wear a condom. It has taken years for this attitude to start to change and as such this report is scandalous. What will it do to the attitude of these men who routinely infect their womanfolk and children.

It is a fact lots of children get the disease as they are raped by men who believe if they get hiv the cure is to have sex with a virgin.

I went to South Africa last year, got chatting to a lady on the plane from Jo'Burg to Cape Town who told me that they were resigned to losing pretty much a whole generation to Aids, that shocked me. What she said was that it was largely down to culture and poor education, there are people who believe that they can cure their own HIV by sleeping with a virgin, as a result there are numerous cases of underage sex and rape, resulting in HIV positive children. The world health organisation has spent millions in trying to educate the developing world to the benefits of safe sex, much of their work is being undone in a flash by groups like the Catholic Church.

I can honestly say that I don't give a damn what religion someone is, as long as they practice it in private, don't try to ram their ideas down my throat etc, but it frightens me that what we can consider a mainstream religion can spout so much rubbish and undo the work of the WHO and put peoples lives at risk.

We need serious education to combat the threat of Aids and HIV, unfortunately this can be seriously undermined by the brain washed.

Bush is giving millions in aid to America to help the fight against AIDs, so maybe he and America are not complete arses as some would suggest.

A lot of it has to do with the rapes that occured during guerilla fighting and civil wars in Africa.

First of all, I'll assume you meant "Bush is giving millions in aid to Africa to help the fight against AIDS"

Although this is the case, he has tied US govt funding to organisations which do not promote abortion. Thus, his policy has led to a drastic cut in US funding of family planning organisations - i.e. those very organisations that hand out condoms, promote their use, etc. So maybe he is an arse, actually.

Think I have got it TFH, Dubbyah has cut funding to organisations that promote safe sex and also condone abortions in favour of those (like the silver ring thing) that preach abstention. As this is the case there are less free condoms being circulated, therefor the likelihood of more people having unprotected sex and spreading disease. I do however, as always, stand to be corrected.

blimey . . .I was expecting a torrent of abuse in return . . .maybe I'm not quite so styoopid after all :p

glad you didnt take it personally, I just think the Pope and the top boys have a hell of a lot to answer for due to their prehistoric ignorance. I pity those who arent educated or informed enough to be able to make reasoned decisions about these things other than what somebody else is telling them (somebody theyre scared of most likely too)

Safeway . . .I wont lower myself to the bait, but with stupid comments like that I sincerely hope you get laid with a minging ladyboy on Saturday night and wake up with an incredible burning sensation, I wouldnt wish AIDS on a Palace fan.
