Just heard on the news that 6 pubs a day are closing as beer sales are down 1.4 million pints a day. People are drinking at home more and more as supermarkets offer better and better deals.

The trouble is, you cannot get a pint like you can down at the local can you ?
Lagerboys might disagree (but what do they know) but this week I`ve had a couple of lovely guest ales from a really hoppy American IPA to a lovely rich Porter.

Cant get them in the supermarkets fresh can you ?

Depends what you mean by fresh? As in out of a tap in a pub?

Sainsburys do a fair selection of bottled ales and sometimes have a 3-for-2 offer

Hic!

Totally agree with you Legend.
Also i've heard from colleagues with door badges that The Ocean rooms and Karma are closing due to lack of customers.

The problem with some night clubs (and to be fair I haven't been to either of the above) is they have a whimsical door policy when they are popular then wonder why no one wants to go there when they stop being the place to be seen!

Terrible, I hear Worthing has recently lost the Egremont, Montague and Bull, sad.
The Bull reopened after a short time. It was certainly functioning with 3 decent ales on tap last Friday night, however having got used to the new licensing regime we were somewhat taken aback to hear last orders being called before 11pm.

I used to use The Shakespear's Head just off Western Rd but during my last visit £3.20 for a pint of Fosters was (IMHO) a bit too much.

I have a great deal of sympathy for pub landlords, who have been screwed both by the Government, who have seen fit to continually increase taxes, and the behaviour of supermarkets (and again the Government who have allowed supermarkets to continue to carry alcohol as loss-leaders).

However, some times they do not help themselves. When tax on beer increased by 4p per pint, one of the pubs round here that we go to occasionally joined with gusto all the anti-Darling sentiment, and the landlord continually entered into a diatribe about how they were being screwed. However at the same time, the prices went up immeadiately upon the announcement (despite the fact that the stock he had in would have been bought at a lower tax rate), and prices went up by 10p, instead of 4p (and they already have non-rounded prices, to make it look as if they are being forced to up prices by tax hikes). I had trouble feeling sympathy for him.

The whole going to the pub expierence has changed for the worse over the years

1 The price of beer

2 Longer opening hours - means that punters go in at all hours of the day and sit vertually on their own while staff are being paid to do their uni homework, remember when pubs were open between 11-3 (or before that 2!) the pubs were packed at lunchtime and had atmosphere.

3 having a skinfull - gettin pissed in a pub is now deemed akin to shaggin a nun, "oooh i'll have a cappuccino and a J20 please" enjoy resposibly FFS!

4 Televisions - if you want to watch TV fuckin stay indoors "How's it goin mate? ssshhh Barnet are about to take a corner"

5 Smokin ban - I'm a non smoker but it's still a factor (only one of them, mind)

anyhoo, that's what I reckon

Good points raised there.
We ought to have a fiar-trading list put on NSC for pubs that don't do that sort of thing and don't rape their clientele on every pint.
