OT: replacing an ancient syphon in my cistern

As NSC is home to experts in all fields I have a question for the plumbers out there...

The

toilet flush has become too difficult for some of the weaker members of the household so it looks like I need to replace the entire syphon unit.

The syphon looks like it predates plastic as it's made from ceramic (see pic).

Am I going up have to bite the bullet and remove the cistern and replace this antique unit with a modern plastic syphon? Something like:

I'm thinking that I'll take the cistern off the wall anyway and try to replace with a modern syphon. If no joy I guess I could just replace the diaphragm on the old syphon.

YouTube is your answer. Im shit at DIY and managed to replace the internal workings of our khazi, removing the cistern, replacing all the internal booty, syphon system bought cheaply from B&Q etc. thanks to YouTube. Just make sure you don't end up on YouPorn by mistake.

Our cistern hadn't been removed in decades, so it was an afternoon of WD40 and hammering to release the rusted up wing nuts holding it in position. Alternatively you can saw them off. Good luck.

Just buy a new syphon with a two stage flush) pushbuttons on a central fascia which replaces the traditional handle flush). B&Q have a few standard units. You can find instructions on U tube, I had to change two last year and they can be a ballache when removing rusty securing wingnuts.

Hi FloatsLeft, I am a plumber and I don't see many of that type of cistern anymore.

One very important point here, is the toilet pan Syphonic? Sorry to get technical but if so you can not fit any type of syphon into the cistern.

Can you take a picture side on of the toilet pan and post it on here?
It's very hard to explain what it is, it's also known as a double trap pan, the last cistern I worked on similar to yours was Syphonic.

You may be right there--we in the trade call it a 'B*****d Size'
From the picture it looks like someone has fitted an old cistern to a more modern pan.
Either way you can buy a 'PAN/CISTERN/SEAT TO GO' from B&Q for fifty quid, a lot cheaper than getting me in to SORT it

Thanks, it doesn't look like a siphonic pan from that picture but I'm not 100%.

If you go to a plumbing shop to buy a syphon make sure you also get a doughnut washer( not a wind up) it goes between the pan and cistern.

If you have not done any plumbing before I wouldn't attempt this job, get Simmosays to do it
