Not sure we have any experts on NSC, but worth a shot.

I have an alarm system on my house and the mains transformer in it is looking pretty sad (leaking and and a bit furry).

The alarm is still working and I put a voltmeter across the output of the transformer. As the alarm unit is essentially 12volt (support batteries etc) I was expecting a reading of 12v but in fact it read 15v.

If I search for a replacement mains transformer should I look for one of 12v or 15v output?

Can you still read the writing on the transformer - it'll have all the details on it. 15v with no load can still be accurate for a 12V output - that and the transformer is clearly rogered anyway.

A 12v battery will have a nominal output of 12.2-13.8v
so it not straight forward.
are there no marking on the transformer ?
more critically is the power output of the transformer rated in VA.

the replacement needs to be equal to and a higher rating to ensued correct operation,
As in if the alarm goes off, you need to be sure that the transformer will have enough power output to ring all the sounders etc.

Also is the output from the transformer AC or DC , as in does the transformer have a rectified output ?

As it has a battery back up this will be DC, therefore it can be assumed the output from the transformer will be DC, but the supply may be rectified(giving DC after the transformer,)
an i making sence :)

You need to make sure what the output of the transformer is to replace it like for like,
Also if your measuring the voltage on your meter incorrectly ie, measuring AC voltage with the meter on the DC setting or vice versi it will give an incorrect reading

Thanks good people, I will have to strip out the transformer to see if I can find any markings on it.

Its a Tate T - BP8Z, made I think originally by Honeywell.

I bought it from Screwfix about 4 years ago and installed it myself. Up to this problem it has been faultless.

If you post your alarm code, address and a time you'll be out (so as not to cause you any inconvence) I'll pop round and fix it for you.

Also, it might help if you tell me where you keep your valuables, so that I can check the alarm gives adequate coverage to these areas.
