It's not fair. His blades are better than mine

Oscar Pistorius

Lost a bit of respect for him last night. :(

Spitting his dummy like he did, he should know better than most about pointing fingers when he has battled for years to get in the able bodied Olympics only to be told no until this year, due to a believed advantage, then to do the same to that young Brazlian just left a bad taste in my mouth. :nono:

Made himself look a bit foolish there I think.

Pinsent tweeted earlier: Oscar has to decide if he was beaten fair and square or if technology does play a role.

Take that.

Have to agree. We have all had it rammed down our throats for weeks that athletes are saints and footballers are scum. But last night Pistorius behaved like the most sour-grapes, spoilt-brat of footballers. His outburst was Fergie-esque.

And as said earlier, even poorer given his own struggle for recognition in able-bodied events.

Think it caught a few hacks off guard, they have got so used to churning out the superlatives a good old-fashioned 'cheat storm' story with the most famous Paralympian in the world came out of the blue.

It did look like he was against an extra from Avatar.

That said, Pistorius did seem to have a longer stride length and really seems to glide along. The Avatar bloke seemed to have shorter, choppier strides.

He has issued a statement apologising for his comments this morning - the guy is still a legend -

not really, he's just undone years of campaigning on the matter of prosthetiscs, voicing exactly what most people think is the main risk of them, that they give an unknown advantage. well done him.

Maybe he should realise that however much he's achieved for his sport, and the Paralympics in general, it's not just about him.

When he first started to wear those blades there was quite a bit of controversy. Now someone has gone one-step further than him in technology (although he also has the choice to wear similar blades), he can't accept that.

Shame that he's lost quite a bit of respect now.

He is still a legend, you're right. But PR people rushing out a damage limitation apology is also , err, very 'football'.

He is just scared he won't be the face of the sport anymore

They should give that honour to Richard Whitehead. Because he wasn't allowed, under the rules, to run the Marathon, he runs the 100m and 200m, and the most amazing thing his 200m was the most amazing thing I have seen so far

He is certainly a legend in Paralympian sport - sometimes legends do things you don't agree with

BUT

I wonder whether raising the controversy over the validity of different blade types will simply serve to undermine their validity within able-bodied athletics. Ultimately his legacy.

If the Brazilian lad wants to compete against Usain Bolt in the 200m, would they allow it?

I lent Oscar a trilogy of vampire superhero films starring Wesley Snipes. He didn't even watch them, said the Blades were too long. :-(

Wasnt Oscar complained about in another competition because everyone he was racing against complained his "attachments" were too long, ironic he is now playing the same card

Lost the argument when he said it gave his opponent an advantage with less strides being taken with the longer blades. When they counted up the number of strides each of them took in the race Pistorius actually took less !

His complaints were certainly badly timed but surely he has a point; if the International Paralympic Committee allow longer blades than those deemed not to give an advantage by the IAAF, then in theory the athletes using the longer blades would have an advantage. Pistorius could wear longer blades for IPC events but that would mean training part of the time with one set of legs and part of the time with another. There needs to be consistency between the blade length allowed by the IPC and the IAAF - assuming that Paralympic athletes want to continue competing with "able-bodied" athletes.

Just far enough away from LDC
The bottom line is that Pistorius has run faster than the time which beat him last night. He COULD have won it.

Albeit that he does have a point that the blades of his opponent are 4inches longer than his. Apparently an estimate of what your height would be is made by the IPC assessors and then you have blades which reach that height. The difference between OP and the Brazillian is that the length below the knee is much longer as a ratio on the latter. Pistorius says he is moving ten metres per second when he gets up to full speed (which is a lot earlier than most of his competitors) - I believe the Saffers are saying this morning that over the last 80 metres that the Brazillian was moving at 13 metres per second which would have made him faster than Bolt (it takes him longer to get up to full speed with more choppy strides before he starts to 'glide').

Oliveira's blades wouldn't have been allowed in the Olympics but they were in the Paralympics because the rules (surprisngly) arent as well defined. He didn't cheat, he won fair and square and within the rules. Once Pistorius had appealed and the IPC had taken no action he should have let it lie.
