Obviously this is all in one sentence and it is from this hard to see what exactly they are getting at. However, on the surface it does seem odd, to say the least - how else would you explain that home records are so often better than away. Of course, it could be the pitch, the ground, the weather etc, but surely singularly the crowd roaring you on must be the best motivator.

Similar research, also coming from the USA suggests that crowd support does influence match officials.

I did see a report showing that statistically a penalty is more likely to be successful with opposition supporters rather home support behind the goal.
