For several months now I have had Feb booked off work to go travelling around New Zealand with one of my mates (whose idea it was). He is a Copper and now has the chance to do a course which will allow him to work in the riot squad at Pompey matches at the same time. He appears to be favouring this, even though he could do the course a few months later.

To say I am pissed of would be a slight understatement as this has been planned for nearly 18 months. Most of my other mates are loved up and will not go. My question then to the well travelled folk of NSC - has anyone done the solo travelling thing, and what was it like?

I am caught in 2 minds, this trip seems like a once in a lifetime (especialy managing to book all that time off work), but not quite sure I am brave enough to turn up on another continent and go for a wander. All that time not knowing anyone could lead to Boredom etc, and everyone in the world will consider me a billy no-mates!

One of my colleagues nursed his wife to the end with cancer.

After the funeral he decided to do something he had always wanted to do and that is travel.

He went to New Zealand by himself for 3 weeks and did all sorts of things like sky diving etc. He only had the first nights accommodation booked and then played the rest of it by ear.

He had a wonderful time.

You have the opportunity so do it and then rave about it when you get back to let your mate know exactly what he missed.

Long Sault, actually....
If you don't do it, you'll be wondering "What If........"

You won't have any problems meeting people in New Zealand, and I'm sure there are some Albion Fans on NSC who would be quite willing to meet up and show you around.

Go for it. You won't regret it.

:p

definitely agree with yorkie, its gotta be done. you'll end up meeting others in the same boat when you are out there as well so you could end up not being on your own.

You never know. If you show your mate that you are determined to do the trip with or without him, he may even change his mind and do the course at a later stage anyway.

Just do it: there'll be plenty of people in the same boat.

(and don't forget to take lots of england rugby shirts to wear):)

I travel solo a lot as most people know I don't work at the moment (sorry Twatty but I easily afford not to). I would say go away, sod your mate. You'll find New Zealanders are a different breed to Australians if my work experiences are anything to go by. They're much friendlier.

You won't have a problem with the langauge and New Zealand is a beautiful place. It's also woth bearing in mind that it's no third world country. If you've paid for it I would urge to go and have a great time.

Do it or regret not doing it. The choice is yours.

Get bored? In NZ? Bollix.

My advice, if travelling alone, is to make an effort to meet people and to take photos, addresses, etc. They can turn out to be better friends that the ones you have already.

How can you move on if you don't move in the first place?

By virtue of a not so grand relationship I always ended up on my own even if I'd travelled somewhere with someone - you've gotta be brave enough to smile at people in pubs and start conversations with locals, but when you do - its worth it!!.... but since you're off to NZ you'll have no troubles at all !! DO IT - you'll only regret not going!!

Soton, you'll have no bother getting about New Zealand on your own - there will be loads of people backpacking their way around the country and most of them will be British anyway!

By coincidence I'll be in Auckland in February if you fancy hooking up for a pint. I used to live there so know all the haunts. I think fellow NSC user GNF is still in Auckland too.

Sydney .
A definate yes .
Just yesterday lunchtime I sat down with a beer and on the table
next to me I spot a wallet with the Albion club badge emblazoned on it . Turns out the owner of the wallet is a season ticket holder who's been travelling on his own around Oz for a few months . Discovered that we went to schools' next to each other .2 hours later we're still chatting away . Said he'd
met quite a few other Brighton supporters along the way who'd
either seen his wallet or just through a bit of conversation . It
really is a small world out there .
