Southgate is tactically average but this team/squad wouldn’t be where it is without him due to excellent team spirit/culture building that was missing for decades before.
Team spirit will only get you so far especially if it’s built around Maguire and Henderson. lets Face it Henderson is past it and Maguire isn’t good enough.
i would have thought that RdZ success shows that the game has moved on in the last few years and it is all about the tactics. The game has moved on, countries are trying to get ahead of the game tactically but we are playing like Middlesbrough.

Unlike a lot of Southgate’s critics I have nothing against him on a personal Level. I don’t have an issue with the Palace link or missing a penalty. He’s Sussex boy done good! It’s just his football brain is 10 years out of date and he’s too scared of losing to win a game.

I agree we need someone new to get to the next level but we wouldn’t be in this position without the Southgate years.

We’ve just beaten Italy home and away to qualify and the performance against France and the rest of the World Cup (apart from USA) was aggressive and adventurous with plenty of goals scored.

People need to zoom out a bit from the two recent games that didn’t matter and the players just cruised through.

No need to be outraged, it’s really not that bad!

The point i think people are missing is that beating Italy now is not the same as beating Italy ten years ago, it’s the same with Germany. They are in the doldrums whereas we have the players but still can’t get it over the line.

The same Italy that are European champions? that beat us in the final not that long ago and still have several of the same players starting.

One of those teams that people like to complain “we never beat a good team when it matters”

Italy should never have won. My Italian colleagues couldn’t believe that a team as poor as that had won. It wasn’t so much that Italy won, more a case that we lost.

They weren’t great in the final and we should have beaten them. But they were clearly an excellent team, a “poor” team doesn’t go on a 37 game unbeaten run FFS!

Happy, clappy loyalty to past it players has a place if they’re gonna be the 5th CB in squad playing a back four or 6th in a 3/5. Similar with extra DMs in midfield. Especially if it means young players actually start in the U21s instead of only training with seniors without a chance of the manager letting them on. Doubt if it was that many would complain but when they start it’s ludicrous.

That said you should be able to build a happy, clappy atmosphere AND make a handful of tough choices if you’re really a happy, clappy, specialist who has less tactical knowledge than my wife trying to play a computer game.
