exactly...Notters...

Id hardly prioritise a sex change (as important as you think it is biscuit) above some people that have been waiting months or even years for what i would call a "more important" op.

I'm not arguing it's more or less important than operation X, Y, or Z. Just that it's an important op in it's own right and that it isn't always undertaken for cosmetic reasons - as many seem to think.

So what criteria would you use to offer and prioritise NHS treatment (eg age, cost, potential outcome, life expectancy, quality of life ......................etc) and what constitutes a "more important" operation?
Is Notters proposed back operation more important than a fourth abdominal cancer operation for me (cf post#20)? Which condition is life threatening - this seems to be the criterion you've used when assessing the proposed transgender surgery?

That is a very, very good question.

And no doubt one debated by the numerous committees over many years before approval for this operation was granted.

I agree.... :)

I think this is obvious... im sure most would agree that any life threatening surgery should clearly get prioritsed over a transgender op. However where this would be prioritised in relation to say a bad back.. i don't know...

The age does bother me slightly only due to the lack of money that the NHS has.

What about giving someone cancer treatment at the age of 78, it is hardly worth it is it? They may only live another 2 years

I am not sure comparing treatments from one injury/condition to another is a fair comparison

Where is the line for age for any treatment? and maybe we should now stop treating people that hurt themselves doing exrtreme sports

Smoking Tax, Fat Tax, not treating people that have f***ed their liver by over drinking. How about people giving birth to children who know that the child will have serious illness when born and the NHS will have to pay for that ongoing care.

Breast implants that have gone bad, DIY accidents? Ohhhhhhhh how about the absolute cocks that end up in a pissed up brawl or have drunk themselves in a near coma

So who is deciding the line here?

A 78 year old who wishes to use our money so that he can fulfil a lifestyle choice and get some cosmetic surgery .... hows that for starters ??

Jeeeeez ........They dont use our money to buy drinks for those that wish to drink, they just deal with any medical problems that those that drink too much encounter ??

By the way I listened to the guy this morning on BBC Radio and the words lifestyle choice and cosmetic surgery were his words.

For £13,500

Newhaven grandparent, 78, set to become oldest sex change patient From The Argus)

This annoys me. 78 Years old, turns 79 next week.

Yet the NHS wont pay for my Stepdad to have the physiotherapy that could enable him to walk again after an accident he had.

How can that be fair?

How can someone have got to 78 years old before deciding to do this? She / He might only live a couple more years. Surely that money could be better spent elsewhere?

Only in this country

"they just deal with any medical problems that those that drink too much encounter ??" How odd. I worked for 12 years dealing with these bloody idiots and it takes up VAST amounts of public money because they have drunk FAR too much or ended up having a punch up for some ridiculous Alcohol related reason.

The cost of mental health support averages around £4,000 per year – compared to the cost of gender treatment at £9,000-12,000 on the NHS. Figures are a few yrs old but the principal remains the same

Cost of binge drinking doubles for the NHS to £2.7 BILLION - Mirror Online

If he has spent a lifetime wanting to be a women, you think he might have saved a few quid up towards it wouldn,t you ?
It can,t have been that important then could it ?
I mean our own Catfish from NSC saved up 2 grand for his penis enlargement operation.

He should have given £50 to spend in the women's section of Primark, sprayed with eau de urine and given a bus pass and put on the 700 to Pompey, lets see how long he would have lasted there....

When I saw this (earlier on today) I was rather surprised and thought, surely there are other priorities in the NHS. Since that i've watched the news and seen that painting being sold for £74000000 whilst on the next bit of news a girl who got paralysed in a riding accident struggles to raise £50000 for a spinal charity. I cant make sense of the world and am not going to go mad trying.

It is odd that people decide a sex change is a frivilous expense. I'm pretty certain that the person in question does not take the decision lightly and it is not akin to a breast enlargement or something equally cosmetic.
